The Big 3- the slide&comeback of comic books DC INFO Oct. 1

Post by slym2none »

I am starting this thread now but I am just starting on the intel-gathering. I am going to have a separate post for Marvel, DC, and Image titles. I will be charting the print-runs now three times a year, to give a better picture even though it will be a bit more work. I will take the January, May, and September numbers for each of the past years (1997, up to 2011 for me) in each company's most popular titles, as well as charting the #1, #10, #25, & #50 best-selling title from each of those months for the same 15 years.

My one source here is comichron.com, a trusted source amongst those "in the know," and I am starting at 1997 because that's as far back as they go for combined monthly print runs. '95 & '96 are too much work getting aggregate numbers.

This should be fun! :juggle:

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Re: Marvel, DC, and Image: the slide and comeback comic book

Post by slym2none »

I will list the title, issue number, then in parentheses, I will show the ranking on the sales list followed by the estimated number of copies sold. So an example of Obnoxio The Clown #1, debuting at 73 on Diamonds sales charts with sales around 18,478 copies, would look like this:

Obnoxio The Clown #1 (73) 18.5K

I am showing each title in order of rank on the charts, so they will hop around. (If you'd rather me do the other lists by having the title static, let me know.) My numbers were rounded up or down to the nearest 500, since most of these are estimates anyway. Ready? GO!

1 down, 3 more to go, but DC will be larger than Image & The Top #s combined.

Re: Marvel, DC, and Image: the slide and comeback comic book

Post by slym2none »

DC-1

Here I am chronicling 1997-2004 DC books, as I just went over the 60000 character limit on the Marvel list and DC will be much longer. The books I am following are the following, in no particular order: JLA; Batman; Detective Comics; Superman; Action Comics; Adventures of Superman; & Superman: Man Of Steel. I will also follow the top-ranked DC for each month, and as before, if it's one of the titles I am following already, I will give it the *.

As before, NSR means "no sales reported" for that month.

*NOTE* Superman: Man Of Steel was cancelled in March of 2003. I will make a note of that in the May '03 list again, just to make sure everyone knows (as in, they "tl:dr"'d this post  .)

Aaaaannndd we're off!

For Image, I am pretty much following Spawn & Savage Dragon because they have published their books from the start in 1991, as well as the top Image book and The Walking Dead after it starts going.

NSR= no sales reported for that month, for whatever reason

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Irrelevant.
I will take the January, May, and September numbers...

...My one source here is comichron.com, a trusted source amongst those "in the know."
Don't like it? Do your own! :thumb:

I am expanding out to 15 years instead of ten, as looking at the later issues printed of the mutant titles past the year 2000, they were pretty interesting on their scarcity. Not too long after 2011, too many reboots make this a difficult venture, at least for my sake. As stated in my edited 1st post, I am forced to start at 1997 as that is as far back as comichron.com goes for combined monthly print runs (I wanted to get 20 years in, 1992-2011.)

Got a little more than half the info left to collate. I am also gathering what the top Marvel, DC, & Image book is each of those months, plus if the #1 overall wasn't any of those titles I am looking at. It just seemed unfair to not list those - luckily, there wasn't much in the way of titles that weren't going to be way up there until around 2001, when G.I. Joe started to kick butt, then Transformers Generation One took the overall #1 slot, and DC had Green Arrow kicking everything else they put outs' butt.

Then, I have to type it all out... y'all might get sick of popcorn.

Re: Marvel, DC, & Image: the slide and comeback of comic boo

Oh yeah, I might list out what I am looking at: print runs on all of these titles.

Marvel: Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, "adjectiveless"-to-"New"-back-to-"adjectiveless" X-Men, & Wolverine. (I might throw Fantastic Four in as I kinda forgot about them, and when I started collating the data, I noticed they were in the top 10, if not top 5, for the first half of the timeframe I am collecting, although I don't know where they will end up. That's why I am still onthe fence with them.)

DC: JLA, Batman, Detective Comics, Superman, Action Comics, Adventures Of Superman, Superman: Man Of Steel (ends in 2003, yay!)

Image: Spawn; will track The Walking Dead when it starts to appear on my list (Jan. '04)

Then, the top numbers, as I call them: each months' #1, #10, #25, & #50 title.

Also, as stated in my post above this one, I will be tracking the overall top seller for each of the three companies I am following, if it differs from any of the titles I am covering.

Yeesh... yes, I am disorganised. I have never really done something like this before!

:D

slym2none wrote:Got a little more than half the info left to collate.

There are many varieties of flavored popcorn. We'll be fine.

Very hot in Florida. We had to get up at 5am to catch the plane (I went to bed at 3:30),so family was tired. Wife and son are napping.

We were originally only going to go on the cruise starting Saturday but we purchased season passes last December (we went in December 2013, I have a conference in WDW every March, and will go back before they expire in December, so it saved a ton of money), so we figured what the hell, it would only be the cost of food and lodging to go to WDW before.

Season pass is fun if justifiable as you don't feel compelled to squeeze everything in each day. Before if would go for a week, we'd purchase a 5 day pass (two days out of the parks), but if it rained after you scanned your tickets at 8am, you were screwed as the ticket is now use or lose it. Very flexible with the annual pass. If I could justify it every year I would.

Well, for the next batch of 'corn, I suggest either my home-made chili powder, or a nice heady garlic butter.

Slow-roasted whole heads of garlic is the way to go for the proper garlic butter.
