I think that acclaim would probably try to take care of it by asking that they be removed before any type of lawsuit would be filed. If anything I think the scanning project would get new readers who want the back issues. If enough interest could be generated the people at acclaim may decide there is money to be made and issue reprints or possible start a new universe. HOPEFULLY

I think Peter Parker is a lawyer. If so do you have any idea what could happen and what you think would happen?

Hey Ryan, I downloaded all the ones that were listed on the boards, but I dont have anywhere to post them. I could send them to you through my instant messenger as they are too large to email.

My instant messenger is grayballs@hotmail.com using the windows messenger that came with windows xp. It is compatible with msn messenger.

The offer is open to all that use the boards, Just add me to your messenger. I am on my computer alot so it wont be time wasted. I have a cable hookup so it shouldn't be too slow

Good thing you point out the possible risks with this project. However, in the old days I was told clearly that publishing of Valiant images was allowed in fan projects as long as both Valiant and the creators were credited. To this day I have not heard anything that changes that and certainly we should take care that the scanning project does not open up any trouble.

Having mentioned that I can say that I have looked at peer-to-peer sites (which is so far legal in Sweden, for the moment only sharing without permission is illegal) and there are some Valiant comics available already. Someone with the nick TheRant had a similar project going. Does anyone know who that was and if he can be contacted?

In the interests of keeping The Valiant Scanning Project alive I would like to offer the following thoughts and suggestions...

1. As far as the 'legality' is concerned, there are several points to consider. First of all, this is NOT like trading mp3s ripped from cds for several reasons. The PRIMARY reason is because these books are LONG out-of-print and are not available for RETAIL sale anywhere. The original publisher is no longer in business. Some of the people on the creative team are no longer even IN the comics industry at all. So there IS no money to be lost.

2. Secondly, if the original publishers were at ALL concerned about some alleged "copyright infringement", then the (highly speculative) used comic book market would NOT exist at all. In fact, it would be litigated into oblivion. Why? Because no one involved in the creative process, not the publisher, not the writer, not the artist, no one receives even one thin dime from collector resales of comics. And that market has been and continues to be a HUGE one, with hundreds and even thousands spent on collectable books each year.

3. Comic scans also differ from mp3s in another significant way. If the bitrate is high enough (192kbps or better) then ripped mp3s allow people to make high quality cd-r copies of retail releases that are currently available, thereby depriving the artists of royalties and (potentially) crippling the music industry as a whole. But comic book 'scans' of out-of-print titles are virtually worthless in the marketplace. They have no "collectable" value and they will never take the place of "the real thing". And it impacts NO ONE'S 'bottom line'. Unless you are counting those who deal in the used market...cry me a river if the crooks who gouge people at insanely inflated prices get stiffed.

4. Finally, scanning serves as a way of "archiving" stories and art that might otherwise be eventually lost forever as the books continue to deteriorate. Even if they are stored in acid free mylar sleeves, the books are still slowly breaking down. Especially if you take them out to read them once in a while. Every single time you handle them, they age a little more.

As I see this, no one makes any money here and no one (at least none of the creators anyway) loses any either. It's just a way for fans to enjoy reading the books again. AND it allows serious collectors to read the books over and over again without having to remove the originals from their bags/sleeves and handle their valuable collectables. I'm all FOR this.

Now, here's what I would like to suggest. There is a private network vpn available which allows you to create a library and share it with any other registered users. Read all about it here.

http://www.foldershare.com/

Although this is a peer-to-peer system of file sharing, it is unlike ANY other P2P program on the net in that it is completely private. Only those users which you add to your list are even allowed to see your 'library'. For those of you worried about security, even the company which "hosts" the hash files does not see what you are sharing. They only host the hash files which "point" to the files you are sharing. And the hash files themselves are encrypted. The file transfers are ALSO encrypted by AES using strong 256 bit keys and all downloading clients are authenticated via RSA key certificates. So even the data traveling across your connection is indecipherable. And the share size is unlimited. So you can host hash files of all of your scans there. And best of all, it's FREE. At least for now. :-)

To kick start this thing, I would be willing to share all of the Valiant scans which I have. Please note, they are all compressed cbr or cbz files, so you will need CDisplay in order to read them. If you're a Mac user, you can still use these. You will just need to change the file extension from cbr or cbz to rar and then unzip them. Then you will have jpegs of each scanned page and can manipulate them as you wish. Unless of course a Mac compatible viewer has been released which I am unaware of...does anyone know?

I pretty much have full runs of all of the main titles, as well as a scattering of the more obscure titles. Who knows? Perhaps together we can get every single issue scanned and shared so that everyone can enjoy these!

I'll set my library to share my entire collection of Valiant scans tonight. In order for you to access them, you will need to sign up with FolderShare and install the client software. Then create a library. Then you can PM me here to send me your FolderShare username and I will add you to my library. Be sure to add me to yours as well so that we can all get any missing issues we might have.

I have my library all ready and available for downloading. C'mon guys! Greybola is already on board. Where are the REST of you? 8-)

You will need to set up a library on foldershare.com yourself. Then PM me your username (on foldershare) and I will give you access. Remember, you have to share your library with me if you want access to mine. Peace.

Knightt_333 wrote:I have quite a few VH2 scans that I can add to this but I just dont know how to get them to you. Also have gobs of other stuff all needing CDisplay to view them.
You can 'get them to me' by setting up a library on FolderShare and PM'ing me here when you're done. Then I'll add you to my library. Then you add me to yours. Then we can download from each other. That simple.

I'm not really interested in "gobs of other stuff" in my share as I want to keep my share focused on Valiant books...particularly Shooter era (ie: pre-Acclaim) books.

But if you WANT to share "gobs of other stuff" in your library then by all means feel free. :D Who knows? I may even actually download some of it.

Hoosierdaddy,

I set up a shared folder and have loaded about 3.5GB of scanned books into my folder. There are only a couple of Valiant related scans so far -- Solar 1, Solar ALpha and Omega and Doctor Solar 8.

I'll be PMing both you and graybola to give you access

Thanks for the great info.

True. CDisplay is native to Winhoes. But that does NOT mean others are "out of luck". The cbr and cbz files are nothing more than rar files whose file extensions have been changed to cbr or cbz. All they have to do is change the extensions to rar. Then they can unzip them (the last time I checked Mac DOES support rar compression) and then they can assemble the scanned pages (usually jpegs) into pdf files.

Besides, aren't the majority of our posters Windblows users?

Linux users? Dunno. Ask the penguin.

no, I mean when you set up your account at the place in order to add or remove files from your folder it requires a windows dependant application...I have no prob with the cbr part...

Ok,
Anyone willing to just burn a CD of scans for a tired, old Executive Editor so that he won't have to screw around with all the file-sharing?

I'll cover shipping and the cost of the disc....

:)
KV

I actually have a great many books in digital form from when they were being scanned and passed around in the newsgroups a year or so ago.

I could reciprocate.

Well...there ya have it! We are now trading scans with the "official" blessing of Mr. VanHook himself!

Hey Kevin! I'd be happy to "hook" you up (nark nark!). Here's a list of what I have:

A&A 0-25
Armorines 0-12
Bloodshot 1-24 and Yearbook 1
Chaos Effect Alpha, Epilogue 1, Epilogue 2, & Omega
Deathmate Black, Epilogue, Green, Orange, & Prologue
Eternal Warrior 1-34 (plus some Acclaim)
Geomancer 6, 7, & 8 (could use some help here)
Harbinger 0-39 and Harbinger Files 1 & 2
H.A.R.D. Corps 1-30
Magnus 0-44 (plus some Acclaim issues)
Ninjak 1-12 and Yearbook 1
Psi-Lords 1-6
Rai 0-30 and Rai Companion
Secret Weapons 1-19
Shadowman 0-37 (plus some Acclaim)
Solar 1-40 (plus some Acclaim)
The Second Life of Doctor Mirage 1-18
Timewalker 1,2, & 14 (could REALLY use some help here!)
Turok 1-21 (plus some Acclaim)
Valiant Voice 1-19 (and San Diego ComicCon Special Edition)
Visitor 1,3, & 9 (more help needed)
X-O Manowar 1-43 (and several Acclaim issues)

Also various uniques including Darque Passages 1, Destroyer 0, Secrets Of The Valiant Universe 2 & 3, Unity 1, Unity 18 (bad scan...two cropped pages), Unity Yearbook 1 (The Lost Chapter), Valiant Companion 1, Valiant Reader 1, Valiant Vision Starter Kit.

I have basically scrapped the whole FolderShare thing. It was just too buggy. So I am offering to set up FTP accounts on my server for anyone who might be interested in grabbing these. Do you have high speed internet access Kevin? If so, I can walk you through setting up an FTP client (if you don't already know how). Anyone else interested in access can just PM me. In fact, if the board moderator/owner is at all interested, I'd be willing to host a dedicated FTP server for forum members only.

Otherwise, I can try to burn these to CD-R for ya. It's a total of about three gigs of files. So I would need to span a few discs (don't have a DVD burner yet unfortunately).

Just let me know.

Hey, thanks--
FTP should be just fine. Just let me know the log in and pass.

Cool name. I'm from Indianapolis (as is Bob Layton) and I had jokingly said I was going to start a website called www.hoosierdaddy.com and sell t-shirts that said that and hoosiermama and hoosierbaby (baby-doll T's) etc.

Then when I decided to really look into it, I found somebody else already had the site!

Not you, is it?
