Re: Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer
What are the incentives like for Legends of the Geomancer 2?
Me and 3 other customers convinced our comic shop owner to buy 100 books to get 4 Legends of the Geomancer. We will be paying him $20 for Book of Death and Legends of the Geomancer, and he can do what he wants to with the rest of the books.
Will we have a similar option for Legends 2? Is Book of Death 80 cents?

No, it is not, the store has to order 65% of his #1 numbers to get a discount that would make the books $1 each, but they are NOT returnable. The LoG is 1:10, so each copy would cost him $10 but your store would have to order 65 copies to qualify.wwise03 wrote:What are the incentives like for Legends of the Geomancer 2?

That is never happening. I could explain the first issue incentives. This is ludicrous. Now I almost wish I never committed to buying issue 1.

So for my store to get 4 copies of Legends, he will have to shell out $105 right? $65 for 65 Book of Death issues and $40 for 4 copies of Legends?

No. Just $65 and he would earn 6 copies of LotG free.wwise03 wrote:paradise wrote:No, it is not, the store has to order 65% of his #1 numbers to get a discount that would make the books $1 each, but they are NOT returnable. So, I would think he would agree to the four of you paying $16.25 each for a copy of BoD and LotG. He would have paid for his 65 copies and have 2 extra LotG to sell at a markup.

Re: Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer
Why would they pay for Legends? They are an incentivewwise03 wrote:

I was answering from the car, but let me do a real response. Yes, your particular retailer would have to order 65 copies of all 3 issues after #1.
His cost for those would be about $1 each, if he does that. He does not have to pay $10 for the LoG, what I meant is that at $1 each, each LoG would cost him $10 because of 10 copies he has to order. Now, also, the LoG book is not discounted, and is sold retailers at reg. discount, so it's about $2. So total cost of LoG is about $12 for #2-4. And no returnable copies.
Our deal is so inexpensive ($50 for all 4 issues) because I pre-sold 54 sets of BoD #1 for all covers, including 1:60 variant. By covering my cost of those books, I get an extra free LoG #1, (60 copies buys me 2 LoG #1s, at 1:25), which means I can pre-sell 54 sets of LoG easily. It's a pretty simple math that only works because you guys support me. Not many (if any) retailers could do this. That's why we offer the cool prints and other stuff, to make those deals special.
And BTW, I am not making much money on those, considering the additional cost of the print production, mailing to Philippines, mailing back, sorting all sets (labor) and shipping all of that stuff out (will be about 150 packages when it's all said and done). But if it boosts Valiant's number by about 4,000 copies, I have done my job. And it's not like Valiant is making anything on those at $.80 cents, returnable. This is all to push the brand and awareness.

Re: Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer
I'm now doing the math for when I talk to my LCS guy this weekend (hopefully - I've been very busy of late):
If it's just for me, I'd have to get him to order 25 copies of BoD #1 at $0.80 = $20
Then get him to order 17 copies of BoD #2 (does this same deal apply to 3-4, Ed? Do we know yet?), just make it 20 so he gets an extra copy, I suppose = $20
If the deal applies for 3 and 4, the $20 dollars for each of those = $40
So, I would be looking at $80 total. $71 if I don't have him bump 2-3 to 20 copies.
Do you still have availability on your deal, Ed?

Yeah i think that was him. And yes they are back in the right hands but totally shut down. I have candidate for the lending library. I have already sent him the first 2 trades for xo and shadowman, per his desire, and want get him more. My funds for passing out materials only gets me so far. I'm quite certain he woud read and resend whatever I/we get to him. He is Ryond Thom, a promising artist in Indonesia. He's doing a couple Valiant sketch covers for me (and couple others). Any suggestions ?

And, yeah this isn't the best thread to bring this up, but I was searching about the lending library, an it kinda brought me here. thanks

Darnit, Ed, you are basically becoming my crack dealer....just bought two sets of LotG 1-4...on top of the BoD/LotG 1-4 set I already ordered. I NEED HELP!

Agreed. Not perfect, but clearly this person is close to the quality of the top companies, and could certainly get some work with smaller indies. A couple things I noticed, looking for things where a person may be looking to improve their work (all of this, of course, if just based on only having the image to go by; maybe there are reasons tied to the story where some of these criticisms are not valid):Tony_H wrote:Some smart comic company editors need to steer work to that guy. Those pages are great!
• The middle row, where the woman looks to summoning some sort of power, I see little change in her physical appearance. Muscles should look tighter perhaps, or hands should not be clenched into a fist in the first and third image in the sequence (in my mind, this is probably the biggest hurdle for an aspiring comic artist, making the jump from asking "what does this thing look like?" to "what does this thing look like in this particular situation?")
• Assuming that these are normal Earth trees, they need some work; the transition from trunk to roots doesn't look natural, and the branches look like they were attached separately
• The way I'm reading the action is that the flying dude with wings came in and tackled the angry guy from the top of the page. If that's the case, he's facing the woman at the top, but the way he was tackled suggests (based on the position of the legs) he was faced away from her. Either way, the legs look a little funny the way they are just dangling, and don't appear to be attached to a body.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.
