Bought the new Deathlok series (well issue #1 of the series) yesterday. I was a big fan of the Michael Collins series by McDuffie and Cowyn back in the 90's and I also enjoyed the Joe Casey series a bit later.

I am kind of "meh" on this version so far. But planning to stick with it since he is my favorite Marvel character (including all the variations).

I just read the whole Grendel Vs. the Shadow 3-part series in one sitting... It's a pretty entertaining read. Grendel in the 30's New York crime scene works well as a concept, and it was enjoyable to see him square off against The Shadow. I've never been into The Shadow before, but I liked him here. The story took a pretty unlikely premise & made it work, and in doing so we got a solid glimpse of Hunters character.

I can't believe it's been 6 years since the last Grendel comic came out already. Need more new material!

That's a fantastic book - one of the core 'bibles' for studying the medium.

I remember reading that as a kid, it was great. I'm going to have to check it out again for sure.

As for what I've been reading, I am behind in everything except VEI. I actually dropped most books but VEI from my pulllist and have shipments once every 2 months now so I should be not too far behind soon

The industry has so many good books to buy, I could easily get 50/month to read.

for ex:

9 VEI
20+ image :TWD, invincible, East of West, Revival, manhattan projects, Chew, sex criminals, trees, saga, lazarus, umbral, morning glories, thief of thieves, Think Tank, the wicked and the divine, velvet, todd the ugliest kid on earth, black science, southern *SQUEE*, etc, etc

Then add in Letter 44, Bunker from Oni and all of Mingolas books from DH, the 2 or 3 of each Gi Joe/transformers/TMNT titles from IDW.

Then Hickmans Avengers books, hawkeye, 2-4 Spiderman books, a couple Bat titles for good measure and that has to be damn close to 50. I like and have read a good chunk of all of em!


I am currently getting 1 of each VEI book (plus edition or coolest cover), TWD, invincible, Outcast and finishing off some minis (mph/stardust).

Had to drop em partially for space (we have a really small house and in the last 1.5 years I now have 8 shortboxes and 2 long boxes full ) and partially financial reasons. I want to build an addition on our house or a nice garage for me to work out of in the near future so I am starting to aggressively save and cut out all non-essential purchases. Unless I lose my job or something, VEI is currently an essential purchase so I can show my support for them.

Even after getting the addition or garage, I think I am not gonna get too much more monthly titles or back issues due to space. Besides the few monthly issues, I think it will be trades/hardcovers and I'll start picking up slabs here and there of keys or covers I love.

Oh, and I am mostly behind on new stuff because I have been reading classic marvel silver age stuff.

I found http://www.maroney.org/kevin/images/mar ... meline.xls and have been following it. Before I started on it, I'd already read ASM until just after Gwen dies and X-men up to 63 or whenever they started doing reprints so I am skipping those but doing the rest in order.

Currently up to Feb 1964.

One thing these have made me realize is that every sentence in a silver age comic ends in an exclamation mark or a question. They are pretty cheesy, but I've been enjoying the foolishness. Also, if you want a reminder how far women's rights have come, just read some old comics. Even the female superheroes say things like "if only my womanly desires for him weren't so strong" or whatever. The wasp is a horn dog and just goes on about how much she loves Pym and wants his warm touch or embrace. Invisible girl was pretty much useless. She got expanded invisibility powers around issue 20 or 21 with her shield but before that she usually just went invisible and snuck up on the bad guys. These aren't exact word for word but you get the idea.

Still, if you love the characters it's not too hard to read.

I love Gaiman's Stardust! I think I've read it 2 or 3 times. The movie was great too, despite the stuff they changed.

I tried the first three issues of Umbral. The writing and art was good, but the storyline just didn't hold my interest.

I read The Hypernaturals vol 1-3. Fantastic! Abnett and Lanning did a great job with this series.
Arkham Unhinged vol 1. Terrible. I got it because the cover was cool and the plot summary sounded interesting, but the execution was just bad.
Leaving Megalopolis. Really good. I'm a big fan of the 'what if the heroes all went bad' idea and Gail Simone and this book had both.

I have read Umbral issues 1-3 I think... I haven't read since earlier this year at least. They are on my list to jump back in from the beginning. What I remember from it, it was a great start, I just got distracted and kinda forgot about it Not much to converse about with ya since I don't remember any of the finer points of it, but I'll post in here when I get caught up so we can shoot the breeze.

As far as Stardust, YES, I am talking about the vertigo book! I loved the original 4 issue series, but I lost it over time to an ex. I bought the novel again on a trip and have read it at least 5x. That is rare for me, I find I can't read anything more than once unless it is a book of facts, a technical manual or a comic. For me, I do enjoy the process of reading, building the world in my head with the authors descriptions, and giving them their own voices, but once its finished I find I can't capture that magic again and I find most things fall flat on a re-read unless I adore the characters. With Stardust, the magic is always there.

I got my girlfriend to watch the movie with me and she is hooked too. While the movie is not perfect, it is damned good and we have watched it at least 3-4 times together. It's also one of her go to "background movies" while she is doing stuff around the house or sick (along with happy feet, tangled, etc). A few friends had never heard of it and really enjoyed watching with their kids too.

I keep meaning to pick up some other books by Neil Gaiman too. I've only read sandman and death comics and stardust. Every read any of this other prose you want to recommend?

As for Umbral, definitely get caught up. There were two HUGE reveals in #11 that came out last week, so avoid any news on it. It is such a fun Dark Fantasy with great characters.

As for Neil Gaiman, he is my favorite prose author. Neverwhere is my absolute favorite even though it is a novelization of his super low budget BBC TV miniseries of the same name - it is awesome in an old school Doctor Who kinda way. American Gods is awesome and has moved me emotionally more than any other fantasy book. Any of his short story collections are great even if the stories are hit and miss. The hits far outweigh the misses. He retells a fairy tale better than anyone else. I suggest checking out Snow, Glass, Apples as it is a retelling of Snow White with an awesome twist.

Anansi Boys is really good (but I haven't finished it since my son was born while I was reading it and I haven't finished a novel since then

If you like comedy, then you cannot miss Good Omens. It is cowritten by him and Terry Pratchett and is absolutely hilarious. Very similar to Douglas Adams books.
