Smallest Convention in the WORLD

Post by tcolli »

There was a comic convention in Omaha, NE today. Man, they are so small and kinda pathetic but free admission. If you are looking for 80's-90's cheap Marvel or DC comics or action figures, you might have done ok.

There is like 10 vendors all together and it is mainly crap. The $1 boxes were all full of kids and others pulling out all sorts or crappy old Marvels that at best were fine. I did see a couple people pull out things like Turok 1 or Rai 9 in VF to NM shape but you know.

They give away a assortment or cheap books at the door and one was a Shadowman 12 which is pretty cool seeing a Valiant represented as free.

I did make a purchase from one guy though (even though I wasn't planning on buying anything). I got:

Magnus 1, 4, 6 NM with cards

Shadowman 1, 2, 3 NM &
14, 17, 18 VF signed buy Bob Hall

All for an even $20. Not great but good for around here.
I do chicken right!

Early in the 90's boom shows like this were everywhere....

Little towns that had NO reason to have a show let alone a shop would hold Comic shows every month. hense another reason the market crashed and burned.

It's really hard for me to get excited about any comic shows after going to the SDCC every year.

I go just to talk to a couple LCS owners I know and sometimes run into Sonicdan or someone. Something free to do on a Saturday morning. One time last year or two years ago, Bob Hall was actually a guest! I wish they would do that again.

You should have contacted me. I would have tried to meet you there.

It could have been the smallest VF.com convention gathering yet.

We could have made t-shirts and everything :(

Little towns that have NO reason to have a show? So no one should be able to attend a comic show unless they want to shell out the ridiculous amount of money it takes to go to shows like San Diego or the various Wizard Worlds?

I go to comic shows to buy comics, that's it. I hate all the other geeky stuff at those big shows that drives the price of admission up.

I prefer the smaller shows with the reasonable (or no) admission price and I'm glad someone takes the effort to organize shows like this for the smaller cities that don't normally get huge shows.

A-freakin-men, buddy. $45 to go to a show? I'm there to do one thing, and one thing only: BUY COMICS. I MUCH prefer the $5-$10 local shows, where I can spend JUST as much money, buy JUST as many comics, and get JUST as good deals, if not better. I really could not care less about the bells and whistles nonsense that goes along with the big shows, and avoid them if possible.

SDCC should really get its act together and have SEPERATE venues for "strictly comics buying" and "everything else".....and have the folks who JUST want to buy comics pay the $5-$10, and everyone who wants to see artists, or panels, or shows, pay the other costs to see them. Kinda like how Disneyland used to work.

tcolli,
I was at that show on Saturday too. Wish we could have ran into each other. I was there from around 9:30AM till Noon or so. Not much for Valiants but I did pick up a few. Vintage MRF 1,3 & Solar 11 for .50 cents each. Otherwise I mostly picked up some 80's GI Joe, Iron Man, Hulks and a few Amazing Spider-Mans from the guy that sells 50 books for $20.
Talked to a few vendors about Valiant, most have fond memories. One guy told me about the long letters he used to write to Shooter back in the day.

Another dealer mentioned Valiant was hot "at least on the internet" when I tried to talk him down a buck on a Deathmate Green. He name checked Zach at Daydream Comics as being one of his main Valiant buyers.

I had found out about the show at the last minute, otherwise I would have tried to round up some of ya Nebraska & Iowa folks!

Ok hold on......you took what i said and used it the wrong way....

I'm all for local on going shows.....but are we in for what we had in the mid-90's? Shows were poping up in Junior High gym's and the back room of the City Hall.
Local shows are great don't get me wrong I set up at one in Sacramento every three months.....it's the other shows.......oh never mind.

sorry if I misunderstood your meaning. Personally, I haven't seen the upsurge in new shows that you were referring to. Even the guy that ran the Omaha show that this thread was about has been doing Midwest shows for at least 10 years, so he's no Johnny Come Lately. I have seen many signs that the great collapse might be on it's way again, like Marvel seemingly throwing as many titles at the wall and seeing what will stick and the ridiculous number of variant comics, but at least here in my little area, there aren't really very many shows (one in Milwaukee every OTHER month and one in Gurnee IL every OTHER month) and both of these have been in operation since I moved here 8 years ago.
