BWS letter to Shooter on Alpha & Omega Ch. 10
Hey guys,
BWS has his letter to Jim Shooter from 1992 posted regarding Alpha and Omega chapter 10. I have posted it here in its entirety for all to see:
February 27 1992
Mk II
Dear Jim,
Here’s the last of SOLAR Zero.
As with most of the latter parts of zero, circumstances have changed enough to warrant my situational changes too. One is that Gayle, having fled first Phil, then the media, and now holed-up in a motel most probably wouldn’t be wearing her lab coat or even have it with her. So, having no lab coat means that she has no rad-detector either.
The way I played this is that after sucking the energy out of the star Phil is a glowing, blazing ball of energy (light) upon returning to Earth. His light is blinding, the heat terrific; where he steps fire erupts. It’s reasonable that as Phil himself is the energy source, he wouldn’t necessarily be aware of his massive light output. It’s only when Gayle remarks, “Phil, I can’t SEE you!” that he realizes he’s emitting such blinding radiance. Then he quickly and easily shuts himself down.
Lots of kissy huggy. Even though a love story twines throughout this adventure, we’ve never actually shown Phil and Gayle happy together. Despite their dire circumstances, I wanted to show Phil smiling or laughing and Gayle planting wet ones on him. They’re so happy to be with each other. This brief counterpoint should add more to Gayle’s sudden annihilation just moments later, when . . .
The nuclear energy contained inside Phil’s body is forcing out of its containment. Seleski knows he can’t control it, his cosmic dam is about to explode. Up in the circling helicopter with Pierce and Dobson, a technician has spotted the sudden energy flux. It’s unknown and off the scale, he can’t evaluate it. Only Pierce realizes that it’s a rend in space-time, a matter-anti-matter collision.
Down below, Phil Seleski has ripped his beloved out of existence and is drawing in all matter about him. His body is acting like a small “black hole,” where matter is destroyed and time stops absolutely. Refer to my final center spread.
Then there is nothing. Refer to my cover.
So begins the tale . . ..
---
I’ve received your UNITY 0 ideas. I’ve gone over it several times and need to discuss the staging with you. It’s exciting stuff and I think that the scenes can be worked out. I need to write my thoughts down rather than discussing it over the phone. But I need to get this material of into the overnight mail, so I’ll fax you some written material over the coming weekend.

A good companion to that letter is Shooter's first Draft of the plot for Alpha & Omega which is on Petrilak's old site...
