Probably my fav comic artist is Barry Widsor-Smith....because of seeing his art on some early Valiant books is what made me fall in love with this universe!

BWS has a very distinct style and did a lot of great stuff for Valiant. The Unity #0 cover will always be one of my favs.

First book I bought was the Archer and Armstrong numero uno issue. I've always liked BWS. When he did his stint at the Ultraverse for Malibu I bought those books too.

While I did love the art on those early Valiants, it was really the stories and the writing that attracted me.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

His Rune character never appealed to me very much.

Oh I did, but what a pile of hot crap on the side of the road that Venom VS. Rune was, that art was horrific!!! :!:

I enjoyed the look and feel of early Rune.

But for VALIANT, I am embarrassed to admit that I missed the books amidst the flshy image 'hot artist' days. I am trying to rectify my collection now of course...

Had I then had the sensibilities I have now, then it would have been BWS and Bob Hall primarily.

When I first got into VALIANT, David Lapham was my favorite artist. Unfortunately, I didn't start reading VALIANT until right after Unity so I wasn't able to enjoy his talents for very long on these books. I also loved BWS in Eternal Warrior 6-7 and Bernard Chang in Hard Corps Corps 5.

It's a shame you missed out back then, it was a magic moment for comic fans. I always liken it to Marvel entering the superhero universe back in the early sixties.

The artist I got my 'first taste' of during Valiant that really stuck was Rags Morales, his Turok was amazing and I seem to recall a Shadowman one off (with Jack fighting a guy in his own dreams) drawn by Rags that blew me away.

Not a key figure in Valiant, but a great artist.

Rags was great, but I hated to see his talent being used on stuff like that cruddy Geomancer series. I still love the artwork, but what a waste of talent when he could've been used for some of the other great characters instead.

The artists that got me into comic books were Jim Lee on Uncanny X-Men & Wilce Portacio on X-Factor.

BWS got me into Valiant with Archer & Armstrong 0

It wasn't the greatest series I'll agree, but I felt Rags' art raised it up. I probably enjoyed it more than say Psi-Lords. Isn't part of the problem that the core titles were so strong others seem weaker by natural comparison?

On a side note, and as an open question out of curiosity, would your opinion of the series be different if we hadn't already had the character of Geoff McHenry?

Not really, I believe it was a mistake to push Geoff to the side in favor of the Hippie, but the character just never settled well we me regardless.

You're kidding me right? You're saying that if Psi-Lords was...say...published by a different comic book company....it would somehow be better?

Not better, but better received. Think of the crap the big two were able to churn out at the time with their sales figures.

That seemed to be their big gameplan after they fired Jim. More flash and less substance....
