Just saw Ghost Rider

Post by tssgery »

I just got back from seeing Ghost Rider.

First, let me say that I know nothing about the Ghost Rider comics. I think I own one or two, but that's it.

The Movie was OK. Not great, but OK.

The story was good, but the action scenes were boring. They showed a lot ogf GR riding around on his bike, but the fight scenes were short and anti-climactic. The special effects were believable until Johnny had completely transformed into GR, then GR seemed to walk like a robot. There was no real flow to his movement.

I thought Nicholas Cage was a pretty good choice to play Johnny, but his acting in this movie is subpar. Maybe it was the script, I don't know.

Eva Mendes is such a beautiful woman, she made it worth the price of admission herself.

For those thinking of taking young children, there are a few scenes they might find frightening. Demons jumping out and such, be warned.

My review: C

Where would you rank it in the comic book movie list?

(Between Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk, for example)

Tough question.

I liked the start of the Hulk, but after about an hour... it was terrible.

Fantastic Four wasn't the best either.

I would say not as good as Daredevil, but better than Hulk, FF, and Elektra.

Just so you know, I loved the X-Men and Spider-Man movies. I haven't seen Superman Returns or Batman Begins yet, so I can't compare them.

This is what I want to know...how many people read BATMAN YEAR ONE...and saw Batman Begins?

Because in my opinion...Batman Begins is one big long RIP OFF of YEAR ONE...and not a good one at that (it also rips off the Batman Long Halloween book or whatever thats called).

It stole all the ideas...none of the heart.

I plan to watch it, just haven't done it yet. My kids and wife went to see it in the theater but I was out of town that day.

Jay Tomio wrote:I liked everything about Batman Begins the orign, the tone, the cast all the way up to theatual conflict where in the last 25 minutes they finally came to the conclusion there had to be some huge lame risk to Gotham and a chase scene otherwise it wouldn't have been a superhero movie. All in all, I still loved it - but thought the last 20 minutes or so was at best mediocre.

I don't think Batman begins ever tred to hide the fact that Year One loomed huge conceptually for the film, just like it will supposedly will again in the next film apparently along with some Killing Joke thrown in.

Ghost Rider sounds like it will be good than because honestly action is about the last thing I care about in a movie (I must be at that age).
Yeah, they did make it very clear even before the movie came out it was gonna be influenced by Year 1...I don't mind that...I just didn't like the fact that they did such an awful job of it.

Was Miller credited with anything in the movie?

I saw Ghost Rider last night and I've gotta disagree. I was really surprised with it. I went in thinking that it was going to be sub par, but really it was surprisingly good.

I'd actually put it up there with the Punisher on several levels (another movie I thought would suck and was surprised by). I thought the special effects were really good, and my only first problem in suspending disbelief was the skull on the body, and then I thought "how do I know what a talking skull would look like?" For that matter, my only gripe with GR himself was the skull seemed really... clean. No cracks or anything gritty which I always pictured for some reason. They made Ghost Rider slighly maniacal which I thought was pretty good too.

The beginning has some campy moments, but really it picks up about a 1/4 of the way through. Cages first transformation into GR was pretty graphic too.

For what it was, I thought it was one of the better Marvel movies... I'd say after the Spidey's around the Punisher level and higher then Man-Thing, Hulk, X3 & DD. I'd actually say that it was better than X1, but it's always been my opinion that the X movies were way overrated.

That's a pretty accurate ranking. The movie is not bad. The wife really liked it, which surprised me. I thought the plot was a bit thin and dialogue predictable at times, but it was a better movie than I expected. Worth seeing.

Just got home from Ghost Rider.

First impression is that it wasn't as bad as I expected. :thumb:

That's not to say it's excellent, just that it was somewhat enjoyable. :)

My advice to anyone who hasn't seen it yet is to tell yourself that it is going to suck,
and you will be pleasantly surprised... but don't tell yourself that you'll be pleasantly surprised,
or else you'll be disappointed.

Got it?

So which superhero movie is the consensus # 1??

For me it's Batman Begins. I remember thinking, YES! They nailed it! For once somebody got it right...

I'd rate V highly as well. But I would think Vertigo characters and stories translate to film better than your typical superhero. More depth of character, plot, less flashy costumes, etc.

All-time? Superman, #1, the Christopher Reeves one. Modern movies only? Well, that's where it gets difficult.

I still need to watch Batman Begins again - I just didn't see it as all that great the first time.

You've got to be Kidder...! As in Margot, she always detracted from those films for me.... Although it was a great origin movie and Reeves was fantastic.
The whole, flying backwards around the earth to reverse time kinda detracted too. Then again, my little bro's a huge Superman fan and he loved that part - but what the hell does he know.

Now if it was Hulk doing something so unbelievable I'd totally be into it

Nostalgia always comes into it...whatever you grew up with is always a sentimental favourite...so for me Batman...Nicholson Keaton...is my favourite.

But if I was gonna be totally unbiased it would HAVE TO BE Spiderman. That is one GREAT movie and that is one movie where they TOTALLY got it right, thats a real comic fan making that movie. :thumb:

I was really into the Crow when I was in high school. I still think the first movie is great, and the original comics were inspired, but now I'm looking to get rid of the Crow collection I've amassed over the years.... limited/numbered prints, card sets, stuff like that. I think I have an original 6ft maquee standup from the first movie, still in the original box it was shipped in. Don't ask how I got my hands on that thing....
