Art

Been a while since I posted anything. Any thoughts as to why a Rai #0 page is only going for $250 on eBay? Are V. art prices slowly going down and overall V. interest starts to fade again?

Always good to see you post. There's never any safe answer on art prices. Your post made me notice that my eBay notifications had turned inactive. And I don't find any Rai art in the completed auctions. Do you have a link?

There are a lot better pages to be had out there, and cleaner, for $250.

Thanks for the link. Maybe it could have done better with a lower starting bid. Hard to tell. Either way it feels like the right general area.

I was also watching this auction and was shocked that it only sold for the opening price...

Whoever was selling it should have done a little more homework on it.

Tom Ryder the penciler? I mean come on.

I know it's just a switch on the inker and penciler but little things like that matter when you're selling a page like Rai #0

IMO

Overall interest (not just art but the books as well) fading? Seems to me there is a lot of competition on certain items.

From Rai 0?
I didn't want it, and I buy a lot of art. It is in my opinion one of the weakest pages of the issue, and from the scan, appears to have a significant number of paste-ups and yellowing. There is much better art out there from that artist, for that price, regardless of the issue. If it was one of the colors that I have from this issue, then I would have considered bidding on it if the reserve would have been lower.

As I have long said, do not buy Valiant art for an investment. It is not a good one. At present there may only be a handful of art buyers out there willing to pay decent prices for Valiant art (excluding particular artists' work). I doubt the number is going to rise the older the defunct titles get. Usually, it is only 2 or maybe 3 buyers running the price up on these pages once the initial bidders get through. The only exception I can remember to this in recent memory was the Lapham covers.

Keep jacking the reserves up and inflating the prices and sellers run the risk of running even these folks off.

Buy the pieces you like, do not buy art simply becuase it is from a particular title or issue.

I understand OA is OA - but I agree with Jay. That's a very yellowed piece...

The main reason I was turned off of this page was it's condition...

This is the reason I didn't Bid. I really do not like paste over artwork. Especially when they are sometimes photo copies of art done on another board. I have a few pages that I consider incomplete because I am missing the artwork for a replacement panel or two. $250 was high IMO. Based on condition I would have gone $50 to $100 tops.

It's good hearing from you guys.

Obviously some people sit back and wait to buy "pretty art," the nice clean splash pages from late Turok issues that are flooding eBay right now. $20 a pop. They look great on your wall. The art I love though, is the historic art. Rai #0 is the bible of the VALIANT universe. They spent so much time crafting that issue, that there is hardly a "pretty art" page in the entire issue. (The exception is the splash page #1, which doesn't have a mark on it.) The same applies to pre-Unity art (I snagged a Steel Nation page a week earlier that I thought would go for more) and cover art. I love its originality. I love its history. I would gladly display the "ugliest" page of Rai #0 on my wall.

Thanks again, it's good to hear everyones' opinions.

Oooh. My eBay notifications have obviously been down for too long. Although I am currenty not in any financial shape to compete with you. That was a good example of what you're saying. It was a page with much meaning for the story. Glad you got it. I do hope you're wrong when you think it went cheap, though. I don't want to have to increase my insurance coverage. :P
