Do you think that the next generation will...
still read comic books?
I was just looking at my daughter's class picture.
I wonder if those 6 year old boys will be future comic book readers?
Just curious about your thoughts.

Probably not, I would say movies/cartoons will be the future for intellictual properties, actually, as far as profitability for the majors, it probably is already.Elveen wrote:still read comic books?

That's just bad customer service. How does he expect to grow readership (grow his business) when he's rude to new customers?maraxusofkeld wrote:I think a lot of comic shop owners are very arrogant and ignorant to new customers, so I am not sure how that will work out. My LCS owner is that way. New customers will come and he will just be rude and sickening which isn't the way to be when running a business.

I don't think comic books will die completely, but their prime has way passed. They will go the way of slot cars and other such things. There will be a base of serious collectors and there will be a small number of new people getting into the hobby, but the vast majority will be older adults collecting and reading out of a sense of nostalgia and their focus will mostly be on back issues, not new comics. The main population will not even realize they still make comic books. The main outlet will be TPBs in mainstream bookstores.
I used to think increased distribution and exposure in grocery stores, drug stores, etc would solve the problem, but it won't. Hot Wheels bought Tyco and started selling slot cars and sets in Wal-Mart, but that didn't do anything to boost the slot car hobby. Times change. The world moves on. Things come and go.

Same here. When he was obsessed with Avatar: The Last Airbender I got him a few Avatar comics and he thought they were neat, but really didn't get into them. Same story with Transformers (the movie) and then Transformers Animated (the new animated series). He hasn't even read the last few issues of Transformers Animated comic book and I don't think he even finished reading the Transformers Movie Revenge of Starscream mini-series. I doubt he would notice if I stopped buying them for him.Daniel Jackson wrote:I tried to get my son interested in comic books, but he's just not into them.

Yep. And it's clear from comic book sales that the movies have not impacted sales of the books.mjm00014 wrote:It's clear from box office mover goers they don't read the comicsSolitude wrote:It's clear from box office totals that people are still interested in comic book characters. You might see a small upswing in sales on some of the major characters when their latest blockbuster is out but not all that much for all that long.Heath wrote:Yep. The only book that seems to have a notable sales increase from a film is Watchmen, and those sales have increased off the trailer, and it was a good seller anyways.
