Autograph Card Collecting (Film & T.V.)

Post by IMJ »

So I've been building a small collection of Autograph cards the last week or so.

I like the concept because if they were originally pack pulled then you generally know that they are authentic. In that regard, you've got a cool, somewhat limited card for the card collector, but also a verifiably authentic piece for the movie buff.

A lot of these sets that have autographs are filled with C-list or lower stars, so in order to have a meaningful collection I've targeted in a few ways:

a) I only hunt the C-List autographs if it's a property I really like - for example I've got most of the Indiana Jones auto cards because I love the property. On the other hand, I only know maybe two actresses from "Charmed" so I wouldn't really dip into that.

b) In other sets, I'd focus on the stars, or people that are at least widely recognizable. For example, Adrian Paul or Tracey Lords from Highlander, but that'd be about all from that set.

c) I'll look for sets that have a nice representation of well known actors. For example, the Chronicles of Riddick set is great because not only can you pull a Vin Diesel, but Judy Dench and Karl Urban (very cool) are available in that set as well.

d) I can generate a micro collection representing properties that never had auto inserts. For example, I've always liked the Crow, but that series never had a set with autograph chase cards. However, Tony Todd's card from the Star Trek, Stargate or Xena sets, and the Ernie Hudson from the Stargate sets would go a long way to filling that gap.

So, that's how I'm going about it. I figure it's a new collecting focus that I've put some money into initially and will be able to slow down and pick up a card here and there as I go. It's also got a nice "begin with the end in mind" way out because if I need to sell there's a card market as well as a movie collector's market to go to.

Thoughts? Anyone else into these?

Wow! So that sounds like "Razor Ink" bought a ton of Inkworks back stock, weighed the backs to determine what had what in it and then inserted packs from different sets into their boxes for sale.

Is that about right?
