CGC now grading... trade paperbacks?
This is news to me...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2292500767
I don't think they have graded such "thick books" in the past...
If they're now grading all trade paperback and graphic novels,
that will probably kickstart a market in those types of books.
From what I can tell, people haven't been too concerned with TPB condition,
generally people protect their comics and enjoy/damage their trades.
I can already imagine the craziness that could start for
Ultimate Spider-man trades, Batman: HUSH, etc.
Does this signify the start of a more dynamic "graphic novel" secondary market?
There's already been some discussion about the death of the comic
due to the rise of the graphic novel...
would substantial market activity hasten such a change?
Hmmm...

G...
I have never seen that trade, so you'd know much better than I...but it can't be a real "thick" paperback.
The HUSH trade for example, collects the entire run of all 12 issues, and its perhaps a half inch thick at best. This has to be less than that, and therefore, CGC will and can grade such material.
For example, two years ago I was the first person to submit a Wizard# 1 for grading
(Hmmm, nothing to be proud of actually
) but they graded and encapsulated it no problem with the newer inch wide slabs
So, my hypothesis is...if its within that inch or less thickness criteria, they will grade it. Hmmmmmmm, wonder if they'd grade my 3rd grade sketch of Spidey?

The only time I buy a graphic novel is if it is something I really want to read. For instance, I bought the Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen USED, because I wanted to read the stories. Would I have bought these new? maybe.greg wrote:From what I can tell, people haven't been too concerned with TPB condition,

Other than classic or soon to be classic stories, I won't buy a trade, because of price. I have a hard time plunking down $2.95 on a story I'm not sure I'll like, so I would not be willing to put down$9.95+ for a new book.
If this is the future of comics, I guess I'll start collecting only back issues which is something I'm considering as it is.

News to me as well.
I see no reason to slab the regular Harbinger TPB. But I will be sending in my bluebird Harbinger TPBs on my next sumission, along with the other TPB variants. I'll have to consider the rarer trades as well, like Solar and Magnus.
I will have to call to see if they will do the really thick Diamond Unity TPBs.

Yeah there was a MvP TPB graded, but that is only 2 comics thick...not really a TPB in the thickness sense. Hell the DC 100 pagers are thicker. I would think that the slabbing of tpbs is limited by thickness and nothing else.dino wrote:Wasnt there a predator vs magnus tpb cgc'd? I could be wrong
I'd love it if they started grading those unity diamond tpb's. maybe then those would get some respect.

Yes, I agree with Dino, these Diamond Unity's don't get the respect they deserve. The main drawbacks to CGCing them would be: 1. How would they rate the signatures on the tipped in second page?, & 2. You would never be able to see those signatures again.dino wrote:Wasnt there a predator vs magnus tpb cgc'd? I could be wrong

Has CGC ever done magazines larger than Wizard? Now that would open a huge market for them! CGCed copies of vintage Playboys, TV Guides, LIFEs, Mad, Heavy Metal, Famous Monsters, Starlog, Fangoria, Sports Illustrated, etc., would surely bring in top dollar from seriuos colletors. Any thoughts on this? After all, they did CGC a Wizard...Also what about the Treasury Editions? I have a handful of them, including the 1st one (Spider-Man). It is NM/M. Have they graded any of these? I guess I should spend alot of time doing my own detective work on the CGC boards.

Come to think of it, I have alot of collectible paperback books (not TPBs), & tons of collectible Albums. Maybe CGC or someone should start grading these also. Is there a professional grading company for Toys or Action Figures? Movie Posters? I know sports cards get graded, but how many non-sport cards have been graded? I can imagine what an original Mars Attacks! card set from 1962 would cost if they were all graded high!!---SteveVault-Keeper wrote:Yes, I agree with Dino, these Diamond Unity's don't get the respect they deserve. I know that you can get action figures graded...I believe the company is AFA. I also know that the toy gets graded and then the card and bubble get grades. I would think that the card people would have no problems grading non-sports cards since it is still a card who cares what is on it.Vault-Keeper wrote:Come to think of it, I have alot of collectible paperback books (not TPBs), & tons of collectible Albums. Hmmmmmmm Playboy and "Too thick" in the same sentence...quite a few refrences could be established I believe![]()
Oh yeah, this is a Comic Book forum
Actually, the ones worth slabbing (1953-1960) are quite thin compared to later issues! I used to have a nearly complete collection, including #1. I sold a NM Jan 1955 for $400 a few years ago. Bettie Page is the centerfold for that issue.---Steve
