Original LOTR Trilogy | 1955
This gorgeous lot of original printings of LOTR were the next thing I was eyeing. Considering the coin I just dropped on Homer though, these are already out of my spending range for a while.

Hmm. Good observation.greg wrote:I don't understand the terminology...
"1st Edition: Twelfth Impression" (1955, published 1962)
That sounds like "12th edition, 7 years after the first" to me...
I know each publisher had their own rules, though.
I think a 1st Edition means that there haven't been any manuscript or editorial changes.
I think an impression might be the comic book equivalent of a printing. I am indeed speculating though. I buy vintage books, but it's really tied to what I love rather than the hobby at large.

I think you're right about the 1st Edition meaning no changes...IMJ wrote:Hmm. Good observation.greg wrote:I don't understand the terminology...

So instead of "12th edition, 7 years after the first",
I think it might be more like "12th printing, 7 years after the first".
No changes, but it's the 11th time they've reprinted the original.

Interesting... I just did some more reading about this. Here's what the IOBA defines as in Impression:
All the copies of a book printed during one press run. During the hand-press period, when type was reset each time a press was used, this term was synonymous with edition.
After reading that, it seems that the definition of "edition" is in order.
EDITION All of the copies of a book printed from the same setting of type, at one time or over a period of time, with no major changes, additions or revisions. Minor changes, such as the correction of some misspelled words, or the addition of a dedication, or similar very minor alterations, may be made and the revised copies are still considered as part of the same edition, simply being described as different states or issues.
Clearly comic collectors define 1st or 2nd printing differently than a book collector would. It's seems much more precise a thing in book collecting, and more concise a thing in comic collecting.
And I thought this one was fun... haven't had the cause to use this in... I dunno... ever.
EPHEMERA Printed material of passing interest in every day life (e.g.: advertising, ticket stubs, photos, postcards, programs, some booklets and pamphlets, etc.).
I've got more Iron Man Ephemera than I know what to do with. Fitting because the word "Ephemera" sounds like a sickness anyway.

This auction is ending in about 18 minutes. Given the current price at auction, and the recent purchase I made with the Iliad I'll have to let this one go.
It'd be nice if someone here picks up these incredibly influential books though.
