What is the best mail order comic service?
I know I've seen a thread on this before, but not sure where it was or where it is now. With the Valiant comics coming next year (and a growing desire to inflict upon myself the possible torture of all things X once more) I began wondering how I would do either of those things with the nearest comic store at least an hour away.
Any of these services send the comics along with bags and boards? Are they secure and damage free from the shipping? How are the prices?
Thanks in advance for any info!

I've always found MailOrderComics.com to be outstanding. I've never used DCBS, though, so I can't compare them.

Ditto. I use MOC as well and have nothing but the highest praise. Others here will say the same about DCBS. Don't think you can go wrong with either.StarBrand wrote:I've always found MailOrderComics.com to be outstanding. I've never used DCBS, though, so I can't compare them.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I use mycomicshop.com.
I buy mainly back issues so I've come to deal with them more than others.
Most online sites suck at back issues.

I use DCBservice. No problems at all and they've always been quick to respond to any inquiries. Comics are well protected and arrive in much better shape than the books I used to get through a sub at a comic shop.
Bags and boards are 12¢. Or you can opt for Mylites and a halfback for 35¢ or a Mylite 2 and Fullback for 50¢.

Same here, DCBS has been consistently great to deal with. No complaints.

I just started with DCBS with their 52 special and I'll get my first shipment in about 3 weeks.

I like Mile High Comics. Even if they are sometimes are out of stock on some books. Their grading and packing is reliable.
Mycomicshop.com is still the worst.

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
mycomicshop.com and eBay are my go-to places for back issues, and I've never had an issue with mycomicshop.com for condition or grading of books. They always ship securely. I'll be getting my first DCBS shipment at the end of the month, so I'll see how things go with that in a few weeks. Never heard any complaints about DCBS, which is why I opted to switch to them for current books.

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
I've had problems with their grading, downgrading and their "bullet proof" packing that does more damage to books with the tons of masking tape they use for shipping.BruceReville wrote:I have had a couple of problems with grading, but they rectified it very quickly for me.OmenSpirits.com wrote:Been shopping there for years. I use them as a last resort when I can't find a comic and have to settle for one of their "NM that turns out to be 'fine' " condition copies.

Ah, okay.
I've stopped collecting am buy for pure reading copy so condition is only as important as my ability to read it.

I have been using DCBS now for I think close to 4 years. I have only received 2 damaged comics in that time and they always have placed a replacement copy in the next months shipment for me without any problems.
Shipping has been consistant via UPS and packaging has been great on all of my orders.

In 10 years with MOC, I've received ONE damaged comic (other than the time my mail carrier folded in half the Priority Mail envelope that was reinforced with extra cardboard and had "FRAGILE: DO NOT FOLD" stamped all over it so she could cram it into my stuffed mailbox). And, they sent a replacement the next day via priority mail. MOC for the win!!comicguy wrote:I have been using DCBS now for I think close to 4 years. Seriously though, whichever company you go with, don't use USPS for delivery. Use UPS.

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
I had a laserdisc, in a record/laserdisc carboard mailer, practically rolled up and put in my box one time. Who has that kind of strength?! Luckily it was insured, and not a rare laserdisc, but still. I don't use USPS if I can help it.Heath wrote:In 10 years with MOC, I've received ONE damaged comic (other than the time my mail carrier folded in half the Priority Mail envelope that was reinforced with extra cardboard and had "FRAGILE: DO NOT FOLD" stamped all over it so she could cram it into my stuffed mailbox). Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
Both are fantastic. Customer service at both companies is incredible. Books are packaged impeccable at both. DCBS' is a bit cheaper, though. Generally their $2.99 books are $1.79. Mail Order Comics' are $1.87. $3.99 books are $2.39 versus $2.47 at Mail Order Comics. Getting bags and boards with DCBS runs 12-cents a bag versus Mail Order Comics' 17-cents. So not a terrible difference there, but for those buying a ton of books might add up.
Shipping cost is probably the biggest difference between the 2. DCBS is $6.99 for monthly shipping and Mail Order Comics is around $9.50 last time I ordered from them.

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
For example...
I just built my cart at both sites for my November books to compare prices. I ordered 18 comics, 1 magazine, 18 bags and boards and monthly shipping at both. My total for Mail Order Comics was $58.11 and my total for DCBS was $52.94; a difference of $5.17 (or roughly 8.9%)
And I'm not sure if Mail Order Comics does this, but DCBS inserts variants sometimes at random. This month I was surprised to find that my copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #1 was the 20-copy Incentive Variant!!

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
Based on my past conversations with them, you can request a certain variant with MOC and they honor those requests in the order they receive them. If the number of variants exceed requests, then they go out randomly. The last time I specifically asked for a variant was Zoom Suite #1. I didn't get it, but I've gotten a handful of other random variants.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I use DCBS, and have for several years. I'd recommend them to anyone.
A friend of mine that orders a lot of comics every month says that he uses both DCBS and MOC, and every month he fills in his order with both companies, then just places the order with whichever is cheaper. He says that it is fairly even, some months DCBS is cheaper, some months MOC is cheaper.

Re: What is the best mail order comic service?
For what it's worth, this guy is ordering well over 100 books a month, and probably several hardcovers/trades as well, so the difference could end up being a decent amount of money. For the amount I order, the amount of time spent doing this wouldn't be worth the couple dollars I might potentially save.sd2416 wrote:Not a bad idea.Dr. Solar wrote:I use DCBS, and have for several years. DCBS without a doubt. Nobody can beat their prices
