Am I done with Marvel?
I can't decide.
I'm not terribly excited about the Disney machine taking over the direction of the books. I feel like all the marvel books I read now are adds for upcoming movies or cheap versions of a great movie yet to be announced (age of ultron i'm looking at you.)
cheapens the experience for me.

Re: Am I done with Marvel?
There are still a lot of great books at Marvel. It's certainly not the trainwreck that the new 52 is. But I agree, Age of Ultron just fell apart after issue 3 like there was no direction at all. I haven't felt the impact of the "house of mouse" on the comics much though. Avengers with Hickman cannot compare to the movies. I haven't been reading Aaron's Thor, but I don't think it was him who turned Loki into the feminine twerp from the movies. GotG may be a bit different through, DnA had an incredible vision for that series with Starlord and I definitely feel the movie is why Bendis brought that same cast back in the comics. There are always promotions in the comics to help relate the movie around when the movie is released, but that's typically separate from the main book.
I guess aside from AoU, what else is irritating you about Marvel? What books are you currently reading?

totally agree that marvel isn't the train wreck DC is. That's why I added the, "I can't decide" part. there is value in marvel books for sure.Magnus9178 wrote:There are still a lot of great books at Marvel. Personally every time i read something that is obviously pointed to a movie or a tv show it pulls me right out of the story and experience. there was one original sin tie-in that name dropped big hero six. I had never herd of this property pre movie now i'm supposed to just believe that it's always been a viable character in the marvel u? in another book agent coulson is walking around being a nerd. I'm not sure if that guy was in the books pre movie appearance. so i could be wrong with that one.
then there is the fact that if you want to read the best books you need to look at what movies are coming out which is annoying. Also the under current and small changed that you mentioned bother me.
HA it sounds grumpy and i am.

I actually think Marvel is a far worse train wreck than DC. Marvel has more reboots than DC, with an even more confusing universe. While there are likely more Bat books than X-Books, I can't make heads or tails of the X-Books. Perhaps it's the books that I read, but I've really enjoyed the Batman titles, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Sandman, Fables, etc.

I've read almost everything from the New 52 and Marvel NOW. Just, btw.ilzuccone wrote:I can't decide.

I'm similarly about done with Marvel, albeit for different reasons. I mean, it is super annoying when the movies seemingly invade the comics, but this is how Marvel's done it for years; pulling from the movies (even non MCU movies) and the Ultimate Universe.
My whole issue with Marvel is that it seems like they don't know what the *SQUEE* they're doing. Seriously, they've had a new "relaunch" every year (Marvel NOW/2013, All-New Marvel NOW/2014, and Avengers NOW/2014), and 2 HUGE events (that all sucked) every year. It's like their scrambling for money constantly.
Don't get me wrong, they've had a few gems, but most of those gems get canceled or rebooted. There's no consistency with Marvel. Currently, the only book I'm really enjoying is Hawkeye, and that's ending in October.
So, idk what you should do. After Hawkeye ends, I will have dropped everything from Marvel in favor of Valiant and Gold Key. It's your choice though, because like I said, it does have a few gems in there.
Wow, I couldn't disagree more. At first, the New 52 was a little meandering, but it seems like they've really stepped up their game. In comparison to Marvel, it seems as if DC (like Valiant) just puts a creative team on a book and lets them go. If sales are good, they let them keep going, and if not, it's canceled. Just look at what's going on right now:Magnus9178 wrote:It's certainly not the trainwreck that the new 52 is.
Justice League line:
Justice League
Justice League United
Wonder Woman (A modern classic. Seriously, get it if you haven't already)
The Flash
Aquaman
Green Arrow (Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful art, and excellent story-telling by Jeff Lemire)
Earth 2
Secret Origins
Superman:
Superman (sucked until Johns/Romita Jr. came on. 2 issues in, and it's looking great)
Action Comics (Pak/Kuder's current run is god-tier)
Superman Unchained
Superman/Batman
Batman:
Batman
Detective Comics (current creative team only)
Batman & Robin
Batwoman
Red Hood
Grayson (Looks good, but I'll give it a few more issues)
Green Lantern:
Haven't read, cause I'm not into cosmic stuff, but I've heard good things about all of them
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern New Guardians
Red Lanterns
Sinestro
Larfleeze
The Dark:
Justice League Dark
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
If I were to list good Marvel NOW comics it would be significantly shorter. Well, hell, I've come this far...
Captain America
Fantastic Four
Nova
Thor: God of Thunder
Uncanny X-Men (For the most part... The huge story starting from the beginning of the damn run ended in a very VERY stupid and insulting way)
All-New Ghost Rider
Daredevil
Moon Knight (Warren Ellis leaving after only 6 issues)
Ms Marvel
New Warriors (probably getting canceled soon)
She-Hulk
Roccet Raccoon (just started)
^Sadly, most of these are getting relaunched or just started a few months ago/probably getting canceled soon.
And notice how there's no organization to be found. No real unified X-line, no Spider-Man line at all, every Avengers title is written by one guy. It's just sloppy.
Also, I should mention that DC's little "relaunch" in October (which took 3 years to get to) consists of 12 new series. Marvel's relaunch consisted of 30 books, and they only waited a year!!
Sorry for the long-*SQUEE* post. I'm kind of opinionated about DC vs. Marvel comics.

maybe train wreck was the wrong phrase. replace that with "dc has been really bad at getting me to buy their books."
Marvel's number system is bonko now. "Avengers 12.3 AU." lol when did AU become a number option?
Re: Am I done with Marvel?
i'm actually planning on buying only valiant in monthly issues. this will free me up to buy the hardcovers of the few stand out story archs from both Marvel and DC. I'll let all you guys read them and wait to see everyone is raving about

Dear God, you have to read Wonder Woman and Lemire's Green Arrow. The first trade for GA is only $10 and it has a whopping 9 issues!ilzuccone wrote:i'm actually planning on buying only valiant in monthly issues. this will free me up to buy the hardcovers of the few stand out story archs from both Marvel and DC. Wonder Woman is great. I read the first 25 issues or so. It's cinematic. I think it would make a great movie, actually.

As awesome as it is, DC's clearly just throwing money away.
2. Trust me, it's really REALLY good. Many fans, including me, say this (Vol.4/Issue 17) is the true beginning of New 52 Green Arrow; everything before it was god awful. It's been highly praised for its unique and bombastic art-style and it's innovative use of coloring and paneling. And it's one of the only GA runs to truly change-up and add to the mythos. You will not be disappointed.

3. I wasn't a fan of GA until this run either.
Didn't mention Harley because I haven't read it and it just started. It's selling ridiculously well. It outsold John Romita Jr.'s first DC comic ever (and it was friggin Superman! with Geoff Johns!!) last month.Cyberstrike wrote:ilzuccone wrote: Harley Quinn, Batwoman, and Justice League 3000 are 3 very good comics sure they all have some problems but they are very enjoyable reads, and are worth a chance. Also, not into future stories (Although Futures End is pretty awesome), but I've heard very good things about JL3000 as well.

Original Sin has been a total waste of time. It's a transparent attempt to make black Nick Fury the only Nick Fury, simply to be more in line with the movies. Ever since Robert Downey Jr made Iron Man a huge hit, they've been making Tony Stark a bigger and bigger player. Now they're retconning him into The Hull's origin. Ridiculous.

No, and I really wanted to. I love Cap. I think he has been characterised very well, but I haven't enjoyed the plot lines. I thought Dimension Z went on too long. The recent arc was weak. The super secret SHIELD weapon is a goofy leprechaun that blows bubbles out of his head? I feel like they keep teasing a big storyline where Cap turns against SHIELD, but 1) Thats been done in Civil War, and 2) Marvel is too invested in SHIELD in the movie and TV universe

I feel like they keep teasing a big storyline where Cap turns against SHIELD, but 1) Thats been done in Civil War, and 2) Marvel is too invested in SHIELD in the movie and TV universe
I realize that the Iron Nail's powers were relatively unknown to the readers (and Cap), but the de-aging thing was completely random. Obviously just a gimmick to get a different character in the suit. The really crappy thing is, there was no build up at all for Falcon's character during that whole run... He was just some sidekick that helped out every once in a while.
^concerning issue 21+. Although you probably know exactly what happened already.
Re: Am I done with Marvel?
that's exactly what i'm talking about. Now i know retcons etc are nothing new.... but there is just something seedy about it when i know it's a retcon that is concerned with the bottom line and not concerned with making a better story/universe.CaptnAmerca wrote:Original Sin has been a total waste of time. Ridiculous.
Love Superior Foes
Haven't liked a single issue of Remender's Captain America.
Will check out Wonder Woman
remenders cap america in dimension z was some of the best comics i've read in a long time. The russian hatting american guy was terrible so i dropped the title.
Re: Am I done with Marvel?
I agree with a lot mentioned here about Marvel. I am tired of the relaunches with new number ones especially when you keep the same damn team. The cheap character switches get annoying as well. Along with the events that ultimately don't do anything in the end. Oh and my deep dislike of Spider-man for the last several years and everything Jeph Loeb did to Nova.
DC is also not free and clear in all of this either. They are picking up alot of bad habits along with the ones they have already.

I've been digging Nova, but I skipped Loeb's issues. What's the deal?dornwolf wrote: and everything Jeph Loeb did to Nova.

Re: Am I done with Marvel?
Missed another good discussion.
Different strokes, man. I have yet to pick up a Marvel book I didn't enjoy. Love the current Avengers stuff by Hickman (even though I'm way behind), love GotG, love All New X-Men, love it all (except for Age of Ultron - that really stunk). I can't make myself care for any DC character that isn't tied to Batman.
The stupid numbering and "relaunches" really needs to quit, though.

I'm not saying i dislike marvel books. There are a lot of good ones out there. it's the little moments like a mentioned before that are slowly grinding my gears.lorddunlow wrote:Missed another good discussion.

I guess I haven't developed Marvel Battered Fan Syndrome yet.ilzuccone wrote:I'm not saying i dislike marvel books. There are a lot of good ones out there. it's the little moments like a mentioned before that are slowly grinding my gears.lorddunlow wrote:Missed another good discussion.

Don't worry the discussion's still going!lorddunlow wrote:Missed another good discussion.

I really don't know what you see in that stuff man... Bendis' stuff is so lame lately. I'll admit, they are fun, albeit simple and quick reads. It's like it has no idea where it's trying to go. Especially GotG. Nothing ever happens! Nothing builds... Idk, to each his own, but I don't understand how one can be a such a huge Valiant and Marvel fan at the same time.
I can't say too much about Hickman's Avengers because I've only read a few issues here and there, but it seems like there is little-to-no character stuff going on. It's all plot. And it totally didn't pay off in Infinity last year.
I think Marvel Battered Fan Syndrome might be real, because I'm going through the same thing.ilzuccone wrote: I'm not saying i dislike marvel books. There are a lot of good ones out there. it's the little moments like a mentioned before that are slowly grinding my gears.
