Memphis Comic Expo

Post by lorddunlow »

So, I just wrapped up visiting this small one day expo. Not much, but cool guests who all seemed very happy with the turn out and reception they received. Looks like this show will likely grow next year :hope:

I met Mike Norton who was an awesome down to Earth guy. He grew up just outside of Memphis and went to college here. Jenny Frison was right next to him, so that let get my Revival fix in.

My son had a soccer game, so I got there a little late and they both were booked up (since it was just a one day con) so I couldn't get a commission from either of them

However, I got a huge print from Frison with a chapbook with several of her covers for $20. She seemed like an incredibly introverted person, but very nice. It was cool to watch her work on commissions.

Mike Norton offered to do a quick sketch in my HC:

I'm pretty happy since it cost me nothing. Talked to him a couple of times and told him I enjoyed his Twitter antics which he said no one had mentioned before. He said most of Twitter was negative towards him which surprised me. Talked to him about the Chew/Revival crossover which he said he was totally not on board with, but Layman wrote it anyway and pretty much forced everyone else to work on. He said he enjoyed it a lot and said Layman was crazy, but he was the reason it worked.

I did get my Revival HC signed by both of them as well.

Talked to Jim Mahfood - dude is super cool and it is fascinating to watch his techniques - he was flicking paint/ink and smearing ink all over himself. His speed and detail were amazing. Wish he would ha e been able to get a commission from him.

More later...

Yeah, I've been meaning to check out Battle Pug. Sixth Gun looks cool too.

While talking about the Chew/Revival crossover, he mentioned Layman is planning to crossover with the Sixth Gun next.

My son went with me and was very excited because we got his Halloween costume last week (Star-Lord) and I told him he could dress up for the convention. EVERYONE asked to take his picture, but he's very anti-picture in general so it took him a while to get used to it. He really loved everyone knowing who he was dressed as.

Jerry Lawler was there (he's an artist as well - and pretty damn talented) and he brought the Batmobile from the 60s TV show. My son got a picture with the Batmobile.

My son also bought some Bravest Warriors comics from Kate Leth (she smelled like MarkRoseHFX for some reason) and Ian McGinty who also signed the books for him. He made me read them to him immediately and he loved them.

I was really hoping to grab a bunch of ASM issues, but the dealers were all shysters. Only one guy that was fair and he didn't have what I wanted (I was trying get #121 and #122). I did get to touch an AF #15 which was cool. It was a great copy (probably a 3.0 and maybe even 4.0) but unfortunately I didn't have the $8k on me at the time.

I did see a VEI Shadowman #1 labeled as "Movie Option! $25" facepalm

There were only 5 comic dealers there, so hopefully that improves next year.

They had a great turn out with tons of cosplay and it felt very crowded. Everyone I talked to said they were very surprised and happy with how busy they were which makes a better show likely next year. I'm going to volunteer to help next year and maybe I can recruit some VEI talent and more creators that I like. Many people have commented on Twitter that if they were invited they would come (FVL, Christopher Mitten, V-Ditti).

We had a great time even if purchase wise it was a bust - no commissions and no Spidey purchases. :(

Me too. I loves me some Revival. And the design of Em's hoodie is awesome. I'd love to get one just like it.
