Re: Top 25 Highest selling VEI back issues over the past yea
It does appear that every mega-variant (e.g. Brushed Metal, Carbon Fiber, etc.) was bought/sold at a consistent enough price and/or frequency to make this list.
IF we remove those books, the list looks more like this:
1. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (DMG Promo)
2. Harbinger (2012) #1 (DMG Promo)
3. Harbinger (2012) #8 (1:125 Line Variant)

Re: Top 25 Highest selling VEI back issues over the past yea
How is the ranking calculated? Is it total money spent for all copies of these books? Highest individual prices? (The latter seems unlikely, if the Ninjak Sauvage cover makes the list.) All grades, or CGC 9.8 only?
I don't see the Toyo Harada, Punk Mambo, or Livewire limited books on the list. Should they be there? (Your second posts suggests they should be.)

A book that sells once for $5,000 will make the list, but below a book that sells 10 times for $1,000.

Re: Top 25 Highest selling VEI back issues over the past yea
NOTE: There are “hidden demand” books that are NOT showing up on this list; however, 100% would if they became available on the open market with enough frequency. Do not assume that because a book in not listed above that it is in low demand. It is very possible that it simply didn’t come up for sale.

Re: Top 25 Highest selling VEI back issues over the past yea
I think that Harbinger (2012) #3 (1:20 Variant) could (and should) absolutely make this list. It certainly sells strong at the 9.8 level, as well as raw.kjjohanson wrote:I was super surprised to see this:

Problem has been limited sales and availability for sale on the open market, paired with a disappointing Harbinger Wars II and Livewire series.
If Valiant is able to return Livewire to her rightful place in the Valiant Universe, perhaps this book will see increased action.

Re: Top 25 Highest selling VEI back issues over the past yea
The Harby 3 book has so few sales, and I've seen it dwindle in price slightly from a year or two ago, when it was "hot."
Jesse, thanks for sharing your list. The second one is super interesting. Also the fact that the CGC doesn't grade the glass books probably makes a difference. I think it's probably a smart move. My graded CBCS copies are super creaky. If I'm not treating them with kid gloves, I could see them falling apart!
1. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (DMG Promo) - Totally makes sense. This is a favorite of mine.
2. Harbinger (2012) #1 (DMG Promo) - I see this one as a better investment, and has always sold lower than Bloodshot. If a movie happens, I think it will increase.
3. Harbinger (2012) #8 (1:125 Line Variant) - A fan favorite since day one.
4. Rai (2014) #1 (Gold) - This one still gets me. Rai is not as popular as other characters, and it's not like the book was in short supply. At the time, it was easier to get this book than the other gold books.
5. Divinity (2015) #1 (1:40 Variant) - No brainer.
6. Harbinger (2012) #1 (1:50 QR Variant) - Bit surprised here as well. Perhaps it increased due to movie buzz?
7. Shadowman (2012) #1 (Gold) - Great book, and there are two variants of cover stock on this one. I have a graded one, and it kills me a bit I can't tell if it's the thicker cardstock or not!
8. Ninjak (2015) #1 (Gold) - Great book and hard to grade in that black cover.
9. Harbinger (2012) #25 (1:25 Throwback Variant) - An anomaly, I think.
10. Shadowman (2012) Black - This one is not as high in demand as it once was.
11. Imperium #1 (1:40 Variant) - Great book.
12. Shadowman (2012) #5 (1:125 Line Variant) - Great cover for a key book.
13. X-O Manowar / Harbinger (2012) #1 (Blank Cover Flipbook) - Glad to see this book get some love. I wish I bought more back in the day.
15. Eternal Warrior (2013) #5 (1:50 Variant) - Always a fan favorite, and seems to grow in desirability.
16. Unity (2013) #5 (1:100 Sketch Variant) - Just a beautiful book, and it was always really hard to find. I think retailers and fans got burned on all the covers of #1, and there were few copies of this book to go around.
17. Shadowman (2012) #13 (1:50 Variant) - Love this one. I'm usually priced out of this book every time it sells!
18. Eternity #1 (1:40 Variant) - Probably my favorite VEI cover.
19. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (1:50 Line Variant) - Great cover, and glad it's seeing some love.
20. Bloodshot Reborn #10 (1:100 Line Variant) - Bit surprised at this one, as I suspect it's one of the 1:100s that was actually distributed at a much lower ratio.
21. Harbinger (2012) #1 (Gold) - Classic VEI gold - the first, right?
22. Harbinger Wars (2013) #2 (1:50 Variant) - I loved this series. Getting these at high grade at the time was really hard. A few fans started giving up on collecting all covers because of the dreadful stock.
23. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (Gold) - One of my favorites.
24. Savage #1 (1:50 Sketch Variant) - I love this book, and buy it whenever it's "reasonable."
25. Ninjak (2015) #1 (Sauvage Variant) - Also a huge fan favorite. I prefer other covers, but this cover is definitely the fan favorite for first Roku cover.

Ultra rare. Condition sensitive. Represents a moment in time when hopes were high, and all things were possible.nycjadie wrote:1. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (DMG Promo) - Totally makes sense. This is a favorite of mine.
Same as Bloodshot above; however, it is Harbinger, which is one of the largest pillars of the Valiant Universe. Period.nycjadie wrote:2. Harbinger (2012) #1 (DMG Promo) - I see this one as a better investment, and has always sold lower than Bloodshot. If a movie happens, I think it will increase.
People often debate the significance of this issue. I disagree, and believe that it is one of the more iconic covers from 2013 that perfectly captures the story of Harbinger at that point. Who knew that Jeff Lemire would go on to write some of the best Valiant stories following this cover?nycjadie wrote:3. Harbinger (2012) #8 (1:125 Line Variant) - A fan favorite since day one.
I have run the numbers each month for a while, and over the past quarter, this book sells strong. I might have expected Ninjak #1 Gold or Shadowman #1 Gold to rate higher (based on history, discussions, and previous sales); however, Rai #1 Gold seems to be the VEI Gold to get at the moment. Not a terrible book at all, and it looks great as well.nycjadie wrote:4. Rai (2014) #1 (Gold) - This one still gets me. Rai is not as popular as other characters, and it's not like the book was in short supply. At the time, it was easier to get this book than the other gold books.
I spent over a grand for my CGC 9.9 copy of this book. I think this was the first major VEI speculation book to hit outside of the Valiant Fans Community. Speculators are a fickle bunch. Valiant Fans are not. This book is a MUST for Valiant Fans and Collectors, and while it has had its highs and lows, it has ALWAYS sold WAAAAY above its original price tag. Not to mention it is 100% confirmed to have only 350 printed copies, AND Divinity’s 1st appearance directly on the cover.nycjadie wrote:5. Divinity (2015) #1 (1:40 Variant) - No brainer.
Doesn’t seem to come up for sale in 9.8 often. No copies I have ever submitted were graded 9.8. Frustrating to say the least. Might need to buy a slab or make a trade soon.nycjadie wrote:6. Harbinger (2012) #1 (1:50 QR Variant) - Bit surprised here as well. Perhaps it increased due to movie buzz?
We need to convince CGC to differentiate between the two cover stocks. 1.) it is the right thing to do, and 2.) it will split the numbers and increase market demand for a great book.nycjadie wrote:7. Shadowman (2012) #1 (Gold) - Great book, and there are two variants of cover stock on this one. I have a graded one, and it kills me a bit I can't tell if it's the thicker cardstock or not!
There was a time when this book was impossible to find in 9.8. Still not easy, and still worth it. One of the most definitive Ninjak covers to date (rivaled only by Unity #5).nycjadie wrote:8. Ninjak (2015) #1 (Gold) - Great book and hard to grade in that black cover.
Perhaps. Have not seen a follow up graded or raw sale since, and I know folks have been looking. Same for the #25 Kitson 1:50. Both seem to be ghosts.nycjadie wrote:9. Harbinger (2012) #25 (1:25 Throwback Variant) - An anomaly, I think.
Agreed. Seems that most fans that wanted a copy, have a copy now. New interest and/or collectors are needed to make this book jump higher once more.nycjadie wrote:10. Shadowman (2012) Black - This one is not as high in demand as it once was.
100% confirmed to only have 350 printed copies. One of the very BEST series ever published by VEI, and completely worth owning. I think I have like 6 copies. Not sure.nycjadie wrote:11. Imperium #1 (1:40 Variant) - Great book.
Fantastic boom, and if Doctor Mirage (or Shadowman for that matter) ever catch serious fire, this book will only continue to draw interest!nycjadie wrote:12. Shadowman (2012) #5 (1:125 Line Variant) - Great cover for a key book.
Underrated, and somewhat overlooked. I own a 9.8 Blank, and want to get both sides sketched at some point soon. Terrified it will grade lower.nycjadie wrote:13. X-O Manowar / Harbinger (2012) #1 (Blank Cover Flipbook) - Glad to see this book get some love. I wish I bought more back in the day.
This cover is so damn awesome, and with only 400 copies, it will always be tough to find at a reasonable price.nycjadie wrote:15. Eternal Warrior (2013) #5 (1:50 Variant) - Always a fan favorite, and seems to grow in desirability.
This was one of Greg’s “Insane Five” lowest print run variants for VEI. Supposedly his numbers were technically “wrong” but who really cares? Greg’s estimates still indicated that this book was WAAAAAY more rare than most other variants, and to this very day it is damn near impossible to find this book in ANY condition.nycjadie wrote:16. Unity (2013) #5 (1:100 Sketch Variant) - Just a beautiful book, and it was always really hard to find. Super significant, with the 1st Punk Mambo; super rare, with only 400 printed copies.nycjadie wrote:17. Shadowman (2012) #13 (1:50 Variant) - Love this one. I'm usually priced out of this book every time it sells!
This book deserves a LOT more than it gets. So many 1st appearances, and the next chapter of the Divinity story.nycjadie wrote:18. Eternity #1 (1:40 Variant) - Probably my favorite VEI cover.
It appears that THIS is the Bloodshot (2012) Variant to get, now that the smoke has settled.nycjadie wrote:19. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (1:50 Line Variant) - Great cover, and glad it's seeing some love.
I agree with you. However, it does match well with the Harbinger #8 1:125, and I might look for a 9.8 copy to complete that pair.nycjadie wrote:20. Bloodshot Reborn #10 (1:100 Line Variant) - Bit surprised at this one, as I suspect it's one of the 1:100s that was actually distributed at a much lower ratio.
I think so. Not as strong as the QR 1:50; however; it shines for VEI Gold Collectors, and always will.nycjadie wrote:21. Harbinger (2012) #1 (Gold) - Classic VEI gold - the first, right?
Still need to complete this set in 9.8. It deserves the effort.nycjadie wrote:22. Harbinger Wars (2013) #2 (1:50 Variant) - I loved this series. Getting these at high grade at the time was really hard. A few fans started giving up on collecting all covers because of the dreadful stock.
Awesome cover! Could almost see this as the movie poster if done right!nycjadie wrote:23. Bloodshot (2012) #1 (Gold) - One of my favorites.
This book deserves MUCH more love. Problem has been that no character or story follow-up has occurred since, so it is almost impossible to grow a fan following (and therefore a collector base). Hopefully 2020 will change things.nycjadie wrote:24. Savage #1 (1:50 Sketch Variant) - I love this book, and buy it whenever it's "reasonable."
People often ask me the question “what is the best selling non-incentive variant cover?” This and Divinity #1 would likely be the answer to that question. Or the sexy Roku cover for Ninjak #4.nycjadie wrote:25. Ninjak (2015) #1 (Sauvage Variant) - Also a huge fan favorite. I prefer other covers, but this cover is definitely the fan favorite for first Roku cover.

What do you think those books are? A&A The 1% Gold would have to be on that list. Issues 3 & 4 are a little easier, since they're 1:20. Ah yes, those Ninjaks. I was pre-ordering incentives at the time but I think DCBS de-listed it before I got my orders in. Didn't even know there were 1:50s until after the fact.
I think the Faith 0 Star Wars homage was a 1:20.

Out of curiosity, why does Harbinger Wars #2 1:50 Perger cover (coming in at #22 on the above list) outsell the other 1:50 issues #s 1,3,&4 of Harbinger Wars? It doesn’t seem logical to me since issues 1 and 3 have several first appearances and issue #4 is probably the rarest since it is the last issue. What am I missing here?

Yes, a CGC 9.8 copy of HW #1, #3, or #4 might sell for more; however, this scenario did not occur in the past year. It may occur in the future, and likely will.

But for the past year, HW #2 sold more, likely to complete 9.8 HW sets.

Any particular reason why Rai #1 Gold has taken off compared to the other ones? I was under the impression it wasn't nearly as rare as Shadowman #1 gold which is further down the list.
Also..pleased to find out I have a surprising number of books on this list! Just got a Shadowman brushed metal this week!

Shadowman #1 *is* rare, which is why it's probably not as high; it doesn't come up for sale as often. Books that are more abundant but still desirable are likely to rank higher.GammaJosh wrote:Any particular reason why Rai #1 Gold has taken off compared to the other ones? Yes, a Golden Ticket might sell for a LOT more than say Rai #1 (Gold).
However, Rai #1 (Gold) sold multiple times, landing on this list, while no Golden Tickets sold at all (none were listed for sale of course).
To score well, it is a balance of desirability and availability. A book must sell often, but it must be available in the first place or the sale never occurs.

So I saw A&A 1% on the list, how about a couple other ghosts? I ask about Rai 8 Sears variant (I have one and have never found another) or the summer of Valiant trade? Not to mention some of the very rare convention exclusives...just wondering. I do understand that it maybe because of low sales volume but I love to throw things out there..lol

Convention Exclusives are an interesting but to crack.Ramses818 wrote:So I saw A&A 1% on the list, how about a couple other ghosts? Imagine if back in 2012 at C2E2 a exclusive for X-O Manowar #1 was released with an iconic Virgin B&W sketch cover depicting Bob Layton’s original 1992 pencils/inks that was limited to only 100 copies.
What if this was the ONLY exclusive for that book? Attainable? Desired? Rare?
Absolutely. Let’s have an eBay battle!

However, when book has 20-40 “rare(ish)” exclusives, it is likely that only VERY FEW hard core collectors will have the funds, time, and motivation to hunt them all.
