Re: How Do You Pronounce...
You made me think when I saw the question on Facebook. I've always pronounced Boniface in a way that doesn't feel like it's the right way. So I found it in a video and it's the french pronounciation. Bonni-fass. To me it feels like a french name and that's how I pronounce it. Archer on the other hand feels like english. Ar-cher.

PS, I could just vote for one option.

Re: How Do You Pronounce...
Boniface definitely came from Latin but it may have come into English through Norman French. I would expect the French origin.magnusr wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2024 2:14 pm You made me think when I saw the question on Facebook. Archer very definitely did come into English from Norman French. Bowman would be the Anglo-Saxon counterpart.

I messed up the poll, lol. People should be able to vote for two options.

I do agree that it should be pronounced the French way for sure.

Re: How Do You Pronounce...
Jack is in New Orleans so I think it's either going to be Bonni (short o) - face or fass. Doubtful that it's fache.
I do know some folks with the last name of Boney, pronounced like, you know, bone - ee, but I doubt Boniface would get Boney-Face because it's just too on the nose. Or maybe there is no nose because of the skull. I don't know.
I've always pronounced it "Shadowman" and just avoid it all together.

What about Leeja from Magnus? Is it "Lee-ah" or "Lee-ja" like jam?

I never even considered it could have been Lee-ah. I just always thought it was Lee-ja. Now i'm not sure how it shold be pronounced.possumgrease wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 4:15 pm What about Leeja from Magnus? Is it "Lee-ah" or "Lee-ja" like jam?
I always pronounced Boniface as Bon-e-fase. Short O on the Bon, and Face like a persons face. But i have heard people pronounce it Bon-e-Fachi

Jeff Gomez told me on Facebook that Hall pronounces it Face, so I guess that's how it is, heh.possumgrease wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 4:13 pm Jack is in New Orleans so I think it's either going to be Bonni (short o) - face or fass. Doubtful that it's fache.

I pronounce it Lee-ja. Hadn't considered the alternative. Interesting.possumgrease wrote: Mon Nov 18, 2024 4:15 pm What about Leeja from Magnus? Is it "Lee-ah" or "Lee-ja" like jam?

When was a kid it was always Boni-face (more like Bahn-uh-fus, really) but now that I'm more learned and worldly it's Bone-I-Fachee.
It never occurred to me that Archer was pronounced any differently than AR-chur.

I've heard it both ways. Might be a British/American thing, heh.Tim wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 11:21 am When was a kid it was always Boni-face (more like Bahn-uh-fus, really) but now that I'm more learned and worldly it's Bone-I-Fachee.![]()

Re: How Do You Pronounce...
As a kid I pronounced Boney Face. When I grew up I met somebody with the same name and he pronounced it Bon-eh-fiss. He was from New Orleans so immediately changed the way I pronounced Shadowman’s name.
However I also pronounced Geoff as Gee-Off, and Gilad as Guy-Lad,, so I am not credible

When I was a teenager a friend of mine insisted on calling Solar "So-Lar". Like a *SQUEE* Masters of the Universe character.

Re: How Do You Pronounce...
I've been watching Fargo, and in the third episode of the fourth season one of the Italian characters pronounces "Bonifacio" with the Ch sound.
That makes me wonder that maybe "Boniface" with the Ch sound might be the Italian pronunciation of the name as opposed to the French fass.
