Will YOU Boycott QUANTUM & WOODY?

Post by Vault-Keeper »

Apparently Priest & Bright are in negotiations with VIP LLC to relauch Q&W. Will you support this relauch? Read mre about it below....---Steve

http://www.newsarama.com/deadpublishers/PriestQ_W.htm

"So now, a new entity, Valiant Intellectual Properties has approached Mark and me about this, and we're working out the details as to how it might work. All I can really say beyond that about them is that they're people that we've worked with before who've been big supporters of Quantum and Woody previously, so we've got the established relationship, and are anxious and excited to see what their plans might be, and are optimistic that we'll be able to bring Quantum and Woody back, intact, as they originally existed."

They wouldnt be able to do that? VIP would only have the name Q&W right? Priest would have to come up with totally new characters to do with those name, right? :!:

That's the impression I got . . . VIP sure seems to think they've got this wrapped up. It looks to me like they're claim is so weak, I don't see how they could be talking to anyone about anything.

No...according to the article, Priest & Bright signed a revertion of copyright contract with Steve Massarsky that stipulated that if Acclaim didn't use Quantum & Woody that after a period of time the rights to the original characters would revert back to Priest & Bright (which they legally have). Acclaim let the trademark on the name "Quantum & Woody" lapse, which VIP LLC applied ownership for.---Steve

Also, some article said that Priest and Bright are not sure if they had to send in some paper to claim the revertion... It's a mess...

I personally will boycott any book "IF" ever published under VIP, LLC name. BUT...... That is old news and I doubt if Priest and Bright do anything with VIP, LLC.

It still seems very premature for them to publicly announce this. I'm sure the whole thing is far from over.

The Priest/Q & W story is a little old. Newsarama put that up before the sale was even finalized. I think it may have been VIP's way to counter all the bad press they knew would be coming (isn't it curious Priest is the ONLY guy who VIP has talked to who then talked to the press?). Nothing like playing the "creator rights card" especially with someone as revered on the internet as Chistopher Priest is.

And i wouldn't be so sure that they're just planning on just using the trademarks on Q & W. Just speculation, but I gotta feeling they may want the whole thing.

Not to sound like a prick, but I will boycott anything VIP puts out -- this crap they've pulled has pushed the possible return of the VU back that much further AND if they get away with this technically legal theft, then they'll do more damage to the industry than all the Wizards put together. (Only my somewhat emotionally-charged opinion, folks).

Also, not to sound like a noob, but why is Priest so revered on the Internet? He used to hang with Al Gore in the early days or something? Seriously, I don't have a clue about this one. (easy . . .)

No clue. All I know is anyone who posts anything remotely bad about him gets ripped apart on Usenet groups and everyone who posts about him on the 'net seems to think he's the best thing since bread and butter. Maybe all his fans happen to have internet connections?

I'm glad to hear that this is old news. I hope that things are different now.

If things are as we understand them, limited as they are, then I wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't like that I wasn't buying it but I would have to stand on principle for this one.

At this point I would not buy anything associated with VIP, period.

Hmmm...what are the limits to the boycott? What if VIP ends up purchasing a character or all the characters somehow? What if they put out comics independent of the trademarks? What about comics from the individual members of the group once we know who they are (assuming they currently work in the industry)?

That's why I voted for number three. We just don't know enough about ANYTHING yet. Heck, we can't even find which state VIP LLC is located in....:!:---Steve

I would be seriously torn ... Q&W was a great read, and I'm a big fan of Priest.

But ...

If one came out today I would not buy it. We'll eventually see what the real circumstances are, though.

I have never read Q&W anyway, so I doubt that would even notice if they put out a new book. The only thing that I know about them is some super gay cover that someone posted...

Yeah that cover is lame. But the boots are lame on purpose, theres a whole story behind them in the letters page and it was a running gag in the books. If you haven't read Q&W you are seriously missing out man. I would go grab some issues quick.

Honestly I doubt that I will be doing that any time soon. I dont really read comics anymore....I am still on the hunt for several books, but am in no real hurry to find them. This is all about the hunt for me. I like looking for something. Right now picking up a new book doesnt really interest me. I want to finish my cerebus and valiant runs first. :thumb:
