Amethyst Princess of Gemworld
Anyone ever read this series from 1983? Better than Harry Potter......Amethyst was a 13 year old on Earth, but a 20 year old on her native Gemworld. As a child, Amethyst was spirited to Earth as the evil forces of Dark Opal and Sardonyx killed her parents. For 13 years on Earth, Amy (Amethyst) lived a normal life until her "heritage" came looking for her.
After a series of adventures, Amethyst unites the 10 free kingdoms of her Gemworld in a final conflict with Dark Opal.
Sadly the series was continued in another volume after 1983. It was written very badly by a writer named Keith Giffen. Giffen has a bad habit of killing or rebooting characters.
I strongly recommend one read Amethyst Princess of Gemworld (1983). It can be found in the 25 cent bins sometimes. It is an awesome read. Anyone ever read this series? If not, read this 1983 series and thank me later

Wow. No one has commented on my topic. Here is more information on Amethyst. It had 3 series and a couple one shots.
Series 1 (1983) 12 issues labled "maxi-series"
Annual 1 (1984) One shot
Series 2 (1984) 16 issues. Written badly in last 6 issues by Keith Giffen's
reboot, killing, character departure story style
Special 1(1986) 1 shot badly written by KG
Series 3 (1987) 4 issues. Pure Keith Giffen smack. You would
never recognize the character if reading this.
These issues were KG's lame attempt to
shoehorn Amethyst in DC's Legion of Super
Heroes continuity.
For those of you guys that like blond babes and D&D
type stuff, this series is a great read until KG starts
writing

John,
I got an email from Amethyst creator Gary Cohn. There was an intended toyline for the Amethyst series, these never got going. I don't know what Jemm is................unless you are referring the Dc comic Jemm Son of Saturn.
Amethyst was only intended to go 12 issues and finish. Mr Cohn for one reason or another had to give up rights to his creation to entities he referred to at Dc comics as "Goblins" I think he basically ignores any thing done to his character after the original 12 issues.
Mr. Cohn considers his Amethyst done from the original 1983 series.
Since the character Amethyst has been in limbo mostly since 1987, Wonder what it take in money to buy permanent rights to the character?

Well, I can't believe this topic is revived again. The Amethyst series isn't bad until Giffen starts writing it. Read the 1st 12 issue maxi series from 1983. Myron I know much you enjoyed Giffen's tenure on Magnus (kidding). Giffen's style of writing is quite predictable if a book has low sales. Giffen does to Magnus as the same to Amethyst. Giffen also dorks the Dc comic Hex (Bad art big time) Green Lantern Emerald Dawn 2, Etc.
Everyone has an opinion and I can respect that. There are Giffen Zombies out there that say "I like everything Giffen writes." For a low key writer, he does have a small following.
As for Magnus, how is it that Giffen's magic hand could not save the book from cancellation? You think he got more off base with Magnus than ever, as compared to the Shooter run? Sure there were other factors in Magnus' cancellation-----bottom line------------>book went to the toilet with worse writing. I stopped buying Magnus at about #38. Why? Premise sucked (Bedard) and knew I could wait for the comics to hit 25 cents land. Glad I saved my $$ and formed an opinion later. I still buy on the cheap and never buy new comics
Is it fun to read about a character one likes and have him/her killed or made into something unrecognizable? Also, why do people talk more of Shooters run on Magnus than Giffens? Maybe Shooter's stories were far better and fun to read? Could go on, but hated Torque Jr. and the instant aging 20 years. There weren't any stories to be told in 4002 anymore???
