Top 5 'Gimicky' comic covers of all time!
Loved them or hated them, we all have some. While most came out in the 90s they still get released by the publishers from time to time. Let's find out what our favorites were. Variants not included.
My pics off the top of my head:
1. Ghost rider Vol.2 #15 Glow in the dark (was it the very first glow in the dark??)
2. Solar #10 all black 'nuff said (includes both printings)
3. XO Manowar #0 apparently drawn by Joe Quesada...
4. Punisher Warzone #1 diecut, Romita Jr art. Overall well done.
5. Superman #75 ok,ok,ok its not the cover but the polybag that made it, but it sure made everyone take notice wheather big blue was dead or not

Superman #82 featured a really nice cover by D. Jurgens. That is one of my favorite covers of all time. With Cyborg in the background and Superman flying towards the reader. Classic.

There were 2 comics I would put on the list. Both by Malibu
One was an issue of the Ferret that had the entire edge die cut like a face.
Another was and issue of the Protectors that had a hole going through the entire comic like it was shot.
I also liked the Superman book that had a "colorform" cover that included a sheet of characters. I think it had Lobo and you could create your own cover.

Yeah, I remember those two great covers both. The first time I saw the Ferret cover (I think it was #1 of the ongoing series) I actually did a double take like "whoa, what's that?"
That was a great one. Superman: Man Of Steel #30 IIRC. One the most original ideas I've ever seen.

Absolute favorite 'gimmick' cover of all time: Green Lantern #81, 2nd series natch. I dunno why, but that sparkly lantern just really...rocked.
Oh, and Silver Surfer #75. And Wildcats #2, 1st series (which DID evoke some ooos and ahhhhs when it was taken out of the box!) And all the Ultraverse Hologram covers. And any 'holochrome' cover (like the Avengylene #1 variant...remember when THAT was $100??), Darkness #11, X-Men Alpha and Omega golds, and Vampirella Monthly #12 Holo-plaid (These are the shimmery, rainbowy ones, not the regular ones.) Oh, and of course, EW #1 Embossed gold.
(Ok, so apparently Zeph has a thing for bright, shiny, sparkly things.

That is the Protectors book from Malibu we listed above. It was promoted as a bullet hole.fryabusa wrote:This is one of my favorite covers of all time. How about the 2 embossed Fantastic Four covers of the Human Torch going nova. And didn't one independent company put out a book that had an actual bullet hole in it?1. Ghost rider Vol.2 #15 Glow in the dark (was it the very first glow in the dark??)

Here is your chance to make a cheap glow in the dark wall mural!R Daneel wrote:I've always been a big fan of the GR #15. I used to have one of the reprints in my room, up on the wall. I'm blast it with my reading light before hitting the sack, and lie there staring as I went to sleep. Awesome!

That is the 2nd print of the book. You would think they would list it in the description.lobo wrote:Here is your chance to make a cheap glow in the dark wall mural!R Daneel wrote:I've always been a big fan of the GR #15. I know its second print, the gold cover is obvious. Sometimes these sellers don't know second print from first print even if its a Marvel Gold cover. I've seen many New Mutants #87 auctions where its obviously the gold cover but the fact its a second printing is never mentioned.x-omatic wrote: That is the 2nd print of the book. As usual its buyer beware people!

Wildcats Vol ! #2 with the prism cover and Solar #10 with the black cover were 2 of the best but the best gimmic (and I think one of the best covers of all time) was waaaay back on Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider Man #101. It was all black and white and Spidey was wearing the old black and white costume swinging through the city. AWESOME!!!
