As far as cheap goes most mainstream back issues you find after 1980 should fit the bill if you've got a fair retailer who actually want to move his stock.

As far as "good" goes, I mean damn, where do I start?

Spectre 1-63 by Orstrander/Mandrake (the 90's series from DC)
Starman 1-75 (the 90's series by DC)
Shadowman (the first series from Valiant)
The Icon and Xombi series from Milestone
The first 32 issues of Hardware from Milestone
ANYTHING by Defiant
ANY comic from Broadway
Dreadstar up to issue 30 (from Epic and First)
Doom Patrol 1-18 (the recent DC series by Byrne)
Next Men (from Dark Horse, unfortunately the one issue with Hellboy in it is expensive but the rest should be worthless)
Nexus (from First and Dark Horse)
The Black Hood (from Impact)
Kull #2 (from the 80's, it's got a nightime cover with werewolves on it)
Conan Red Nails special (reprints the whole classic story in one special)
Lobo 1-4, Paramilitary Christmas Special, and Comic Convention Special

Thanks Todd, this is the kind of list I was looking for. I've read a lot of this stuff and liked it. I'll try and track down the rest.

I think the Lobo Paramilitary special is one of the best comic reads of the '90's everyone should check it out.

I remember Static being the best Milestone book, yet it didn't make your list any reason? I'm not sure I've read the others so if they're better I'll check them out.

The MAX Fury series is decent too.
and "The Earth's Mightiest Heroes" mini series is a GREAT read...

Great reads? If you prefer more adult-minded stories check out Alias by Bendis or Powers.

Check out Planetary by Ellis or better yet, wait until the run ends and pick them up cheaper still. That title has been fabulous and Ellis trips out intellectually at times.

Rising Stars by Straczinski got lots of good press and should be cheap nowadays. But I never read it....

Back to Ellis, his/Millar's Stormwatch/Authority run. Yeah, I can't believe I just recommended an old Image title

Bruce Jones' Hulk run - nowhere near as expensive as it had been...

Bendis Daredevil run - darn good reading and prices had calmed down but admittedly, I haven't looked lately.

Find writers you like and huntdown their discontinued titles. Here was a surprise, I picked up 76 CrossGen books for a dime each last week - that stuff was surprisingly good!

Paramilitary Christmas special BTW, is one of my all time favorite reads.

That is a book I'd buy slabbed for the fun of it and hang on the wall!

I remember Static being the best Milestone book, yet it didn't make your list any reason? I'm not sure I've read the others so if they're better I'll check them out.

Partly becuase I thought the other books had slightly better writing and better art but mainly because I forgot about the series . Static was very good.

Another really, really good Milestone series I forgot was Xombi. I also highly recommend that book.

The Badger -- by First Comics (hilarious) haven't tried Images or Dark horses incarnations


Grimjack -- again by First comics


both series can be had quite cheap and both are decent reads

Dr. Fate (1980s) 1-24: weird, interesting stuff delivered in unpredictable ways.
New Teen Titans/ Tales of the Teen Titans (1980s) - nearly the entire run, but especially 30-44. Major character/ inter-character synergy and development. The first two issues will cost you lots, but the rest are often in dollar bins.
X-Man (1990s) - start at the begining and keep going until you don't like it anymore. It's a fascinating premise and I find the main character very likable.
New Mutants (1980s) 1-86. It was a damn good series with tons of character development until Liefield turned it into the Cable show.
Classic X-Men/ X-Men Classic (1980s-1990s): Reprints the very best years of X-Men history in near-complete order.

There's actually a reprint of issue 1 they did back in 2000 for the "millenium editions" that's worth next to nothing. Unfortnately, I don't think the same is true of issue 2 which features the first appearance of Deathstroke. Did they ever come out with an affordable trade paperback of the first few issues (I know they had a hard cover which I laughed since it cost a good bit more then it would take to get the actual individual issues).

I've fished out issues as early as 10 out a back issue bin and I payed between 2-4 dollars a pop for 3-9.

The good thing about the Archives, though, is to keep your eye on Ebay. A couple of years ago I picked up the Archive volume 1, Judas Contract TPB, and the PVC set in a lot for about $20.

I've been able to locate every issue after #2 for $1 or less in VF to VF- condition. Quite a few dealers (online and off) seem to have little interest in holding on to these. In fact, the bulk of my Titan run came from clearance bins.
