Nanites are considered science fiction as they are microscopic machines based on the concept of nanotechnology, which is a real field of science, although the capabilities often depicted in fiction, like self-replication and complex manipulation of matter, are currently beyond what is achievable in reality.
Google search, term "are nanites fiction or fantasy"
Google search, "can nanites use protein to rebuild a limb that's been shot off". Or just use common sense.
That's science fiction. Not magic and not fantasy.
Of course its science fiction. But its not hard science. Fantastical things that don't happen in the real world being explained using scientific jargon aka soft science fiction aka science fantasy.
Nanites have always been science fiction and will always be science fiction.

What the nanites do is accelerate Bloodshot's (and Rai's) normal body functions, such as using protein to build and repair muscle, skin, and other body issues. It's no different from medicine that strengths the body's immune system.

The nanites are a form of advanced technology, which falls into the previously-discussed category of science fiction. It has nothing to do with fantasy or magic.

Your body needs protein to help build and repair muscle, skin, and other body tissues. Getting enough protein also helps your body fight infection, balance body fluids, and carry oxygen through your body. When you have a wound that's healing, think of food as medicine.

I said its science fiction. You said its hard science. "nanites use protein to rebuild a limb that's been shot off" is not hard science. It's make believe aka fantastical use of real science.

It's fictional use of real science, hence science fiction.

The nanites use protein to "repair muscle, skin, and other body tissues", such as bone. That's not fantasy, it's science fiction. Fantasy is an entirely different genre that involved dragons, magic wands, and the like, such as in Harry Potter or Game of Thrones.

Ah I see, this is a terminology thing again. You think whenever I use the word fantasy I'm talking about the genre of Fantasy. I'm using fantasy in the more general sense meaning something made up or imaginative. Like nano computers being able to re-grow a limb, is made up and not real hard science, even though its based on things that are real.

Hard science is that protein is used to "repair muscle, skin, and other body tissue". Science fiction is the existence of nanites that accelerate the body's natural processes.

No one ever said that the adherence to hard science precluded the use of science fiction at VALIANT. That has been there from the start.

Nanites are no more "hard science" than "free will robots" or "alien suits of armor", but that doesn't mean all three don't have a basis in hard science.

VALIANT should have done a diagram of the nanites like the one they did of the X-O Manowar in the database to explain how they work...
