I bought Shadowman and a couple others all the way to the end of VH1. The other titles I read until the end, but didn't buy for my personal collection.
I actually did give VH2 a try. I rather liked Troublemakers. And Quantum & Woody was the best book on the shelves at the time. Most of the new characters and concepts were enjoyable, but the reimagining of the original Valiant stuff just seemed wrong. Ninjak was fun to some extent and it was nice to see some depth to Solar again, but there was still something wrong about them. Shadowman *SQUEE* me off something good and I never touched another issue of that book after about #3 or #4. I still hold a grudge against Garth Ennis for what he did to Jack. I heard it got better toward the end, but that doesn't matter to me. It's not the Shadowman I know and love. Shadowman as written and drawn by Bob Hall was not only my favorite Valiant book, it was my favorite comic book from ANY and ALL publishers.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

It took awhile to undo some of the damage done by Ennis, but by issue #16 it turns around and becomes a solid series. It's not Jack, but keep in mind that his time as Shadowman was finite so a changing of the guard would have happened somewhere along the line anyway.Heath wrote:I bought Shadowman and a couple others all the way to the end of VH1. It was right around the time of Harbinger #25 for me. The company was pumping out all of these new titles (most of which intertwined with the older titles in some way), and I just felt like I didn't have the energy to keep up. Deathmate was in progress (I think), and I mistakenly believed that Secret Weapons was yet another crossover event running at the same time. That overwhelmed me even further. Then they unexpectedly offed my favorite team in their 25th issue, and I didn't feel like I had much keeping me interested in the VHU anymore.
Looking back now, Magnus, Rai & the FF, and Timewalker are pretty much the only titles I enjoy reading beyond my old bail-out point.

Not long after BWS left. I had a short run (first issue purchased off the shelf was A&A 8) and there was quite a bit of back issue purchasing, but I stopped collecting comics entirely in mid 94.
I still pick up back issues (picked up 120 Valiant back issues last weekend for $1 each at 75% off) but have never returned to buying current issues of anything (too much $$$)

What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter

I read Valiants regularly until around Chaos Effect. Then a little later I picked up a bunch when my local comic store was giving them away by the dozens.
I did read VH2's X-O Manowar for around half of it's run.
I don't remember why I stopped reading it, though, because personally I thought it was quite good. Of course, at that point I liked anything and everything Mark Waid was involved with.

While I really lost interest in reading the books around Harbinger 25/Secret Weapons 1, I quit buying when X-O went bi-weekly for "The Wolfbridge Affair" (37??).
I was interested in giving VH2 a chance until I went to the store & flipped through Eternal Warriors # 1 & Harbinger...ugh!
Unilike most folks here, I would stand behind almost any VH1 book through Harbinger 25.

i was forced to stop buying by the fact the two main comic shops in leicester could no longer get valiant because of how slipshod the copmpany had become in shipping their products on time etc.,
my fave titles were shadowman , bloodshot , x-o man-o-war and eternal warrior.
i still have a good number of them and they are well cared for and treasured.
im hoping one day that maybe someone will bring these characters back to life in their own comic books.

Not being able to afford pre-Unity books, I finished out Bloodshot and even all the crappy last few issues of H.A.R.D. Corps. Pretty sure the last one I bought was Bloodshot #51. I thought it picked up a little with Jillian Alcott/Deathangel, but then just ended. Where did her blood go? Can't remember if they said or not.
