I'm going to go against the grain a bit and throw some love Bart Sears' way.
Relatively speaking, his art was at least better than most/all of the art during the final gasps of Valiant. If anything, I found Andy Smith's X-O art too similar to Bart Sears. Also, I fondly remember receiving signed cards and art from Bart when I sent him a letter asking him to sign some Valiant cards, so he's okay in my books!
I will, however, echo the thumbs-down on Giffen's work. His stuff is near-impossible to look at!

I have a feeling that Smith was asked assimilate his art to that of Sears much the way that Morretti did with the BWS style on EW. Obviously I could be off base here.danthecomicman wrote:I'm going to go against the grain a bit and throw some love Bart Sears' way.

I agree here on both points, it was stated at one of the NY panels that certain high priced artists were hired for top dollar and they basically "took the money" and turned in "much less than their best" work.Daniel Jackson wrote:Ditto on both counts.danthecomicman wrote:I'm going to go against the grain a bit and throw some love Bart Sears' way.

I have to toss some love Bart Sears way also. He is a VERY nice guy and I think his covers kick *SQUEE*!
His interior art however... at times... can be... painful... to... look at.
Here is a sneak peek <take note V.I.P. - this is how it is spelled> at some cool stuff he did for me for an upcoming project I am putting together:

It has been in the works for a while (yes - the sketch cards say 2006 on them
)
Anyhoo - bringing this thread back on course...
The artist I would least like to see back at Valiant would have to be Keith Giffen. His work on Punx was not exactly the defining moment in Valiant history.

I like Bart sears' art also. That said, if VEI were aiming for a 'house style' approach, then I don't think he would fit.k_c_collectibles wrote:I have to toss some love Bart Sears way also. He is a VERY nice guy and I think his covers kick *SQUEE*!![]()

Least wanted return? Let me think.
Whilst thinking about it, it is worth considering that every artist changes their style subtly with time, and furthermore can be hurt by bad inking at any time. I love Bernard Chang's VALIANT stuff but think his Visitor pages in issue 13 looked pretty horrible when inked by Autio (no offense meant to Mr Autio, I just thought his inking was ill-suited in this case). The inking was too heavy for Chang's line work in my view.
Similarly I would not like to see pages ever again by Giffen in his 'crunchy' 90's style looking at the Punx ads (I haven't read the books) also his Trencher creation had a similar style it seemed. Yet if you see his almost Perez-esque early LoSH you would barely consider that it was the same artist.

VEI - I look forward to you one day publishing MORE than 9-10 books per month

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who can draw/paint the ladies better than Voz. Plus he's incredibly generous with his fans.
