the worst gimick cover i can think of was from marvel sleepwalker #19(?). it was a die cut perforated halloween mask of sleepwalker. aside from being completely gimicky - it was really crappy too - didn't even come with string to put it on.
granted, i think it makes me a worse sucker for actually having read sleepwalker and buying that issue . . . .
meh, i was young and my mommy wouldn't let me buy sin city

Ren and stimpy had a scratch and sniff cover that was awesome. It was a flower or something and when you scratched and sniffed it smelt like *SQUEE*
I think it was supposed to actually smell like barf, and others like cat litter.
Was it not a fart smell??

Tell you what... I'll fart into a bag ans tape it shut and send it out, you can compare them and get back to us =)dino wrote:I thought it was meant to be a fart
All in jest of course. I just remeber hanging the "odorizer" in my car and thinking it smelled like barf after the janitor's sawdust was put on it.

i'm surprised no one has mentioned shadowhawk at all-there are at least 3 great gimmick covers for shadowhawk. issue #3 has to be the best though-the glow in the dark one. nice. the little image "i" glowing on the back. cool. issue #1 was pretty good-not all that gimmick-y embossed silver foil. the other one-the fold-out-to-remove-the-helmet one-was that a good one or terrible? i forget.
i have that ecllipso with the jewel-i'm telling you it IS rare. but i'll trade mine for a harbinger 0 pink if anyone is interested. i'm going to go check the condition of the comic in front of it.
did you know that the "with plastic jewel" variant was going for $5 more than the other one at on time-sweet.
how lame- i can't believe i bought so many eclipso issues...or x-cutioner's song issues either...i hate polybagged issues now...

I think your right on that, first the SS-50, then the Ghost Rider 15 glow in the dark, which was a great cover as I think someone said earlier. The first multiple cover was the Macfarlane spidey #1, and then a year or so later the X-Force (ugh) bagged with different cards, but I don't know if you'd consider that a gimmick cover though.

I was at a LCS yesterday that I frequent every few monthes. He deals strictly in back issues and not new. The place is litterly a disaster area with probably a hundred or more long boxes full of comics in no particular order (usually old dealer over stock), but I can get stuff cheap. Anyhow I came across a small bundle of ten Eclipsos with the plastic jewel clearly ripped off each one and made note of this. 30 minutes later in my search I came across half a long box full of NM Eclipsos with the Jewel intact.
If anyone thinks these things might be worth something, well, I got an excellent source.

I think the Fantastic Four issue was #358 (die cut) and then I believe #398 & 400 was the prismatic covers, and #375 also had the prismatic cover with Sue Richards holding the big gun .
Then their was also:
Uncanny X-men #300
Incredible Hulk #377, #393 & #400
Deathlok #25
Magnus #25
Infinity Crusades #1 with Gold Foil
Iron Man #288 & #300 with Gold Foil
Spectacular Spiderman #189 & #200 with Green goblin and holograms
ASM #350
Web of Spiderman #90 hologram & #100 green foil with Spidy Armor
X-Factor #92 with hologram
I could go on and on and I have to admit I have most of these books in Bulk

Perhaps this explains why Mile High Comics sells foil-embossed Silver Surfer #100 for more than silver-embossed Silver Surfer #75, which costs more than silver-embossed Silver Surfer #50.dave wrote:the thing with "gimmick" covers is-one will come along and really be neat, but then an avalanche of copy-cats ensues...to the extent that you hardly remeber thinking the first issue was even that cool.
If only Silver Surfer #25 and #1 were silver-embossed... #25 would be free, and #1 they would be paying you to take away from them.

75: http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/b ... snumber=61
50: http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/b ... snumber=41
Among those not mentioned:
Tick # 2 (first prints were "die-cut" w/ a square hole for no real reason)
Cage # 1--_not_ a gimmick cover, but was supposed to be--was solicited as the first "acetate overlay" comic. Lot of retailers got burned when it wasn't. I believe the first true acetate overlay was Marvels # 1.
There's a fun Amazing Spidey in the late 200s that's a photo cover.
Also, I think both Sub-Mariner # 7(?) & Daredevil # 44 had cool gimicks of comic characters super-imposed over photographs of city-scapes.

Best gimmick cover ever done:
WORLDS COLLIDE by Milestone
It was "a create your own cover" with stickers to put characters on the cover in any why you like. But unlike the lame Superman vs. Lobo sticker cover this has all the Superman "Family" characters and Milestone characters in combat poses complete with sound effects and both DC and Milestone style cursing
. Good for hours of fun creating your own epic fight scenes and/or putting the characters compromising looking positions
Plus the story inside is decent too

Eclipso with jewel is worthless...now...
Eclipso NEWSTAND with PRINTED instead of PLASTIC jewel...?
NOW you're talking an interesting variant.
But no, the Eclipso with Jewel is crap.
But....it's probably a book CGC can't grade!

Just remember....ANY DC or MARVEL from 1991-1994 is WORTHLESS.
ALL of them.
Except for premiums, and those aren't everyday comics.
DO NOT invest in ANY DC or Marvel comic from 1991-1994...you WILL be disappointed, unless there's some massive early 90's backlash, and they all get destroyed.

I love that book ... I think there was another Superman book done the same way. I spent and afternoon in a comic shop once "altering" baseball cards and stuff with those clings. Good stupid fun! And I still have the cards.Todd Luck wrote:Best gimmick cover ever done:

And if so, do you need some Charmin™?
