Valiant vs Marvel Origins

Post by kevinbastos »

So, for Christmas a few years ago, I got the X-Men DVD with all of the comics stored on it. I brushed through a few stories, but for the most part, put it away.

Since then, the compulsion completionist took over, and I bought every darned DVD I could get my hands on - especially with GIT licensing to that closure. So.... I bought them all. Of course.

And they sat on a shelf in my closet. I poked here and there, but didn't read much more than the covers.

I came across a quote - more than once - that refreshed my brain, or compared Valiant and Marvel's origins.

That got me a'thinkin!

So I put together a list of books, month by month, so I could trace the companies' origins, re-track, and re-read.

Then, my obsessions took over.

Spreadsheets, comparisons, checking, re-listing, re-checking... etc. All in the name of this new obsession.

And here I was. Ready to start reading - when my ten-year-old daughter entered the scene. Perhaps one of the few ten-year old girls on the planet genuinely interested in reading Valiant comics. Our plan is now to re-read the universes, and reflect on them, tracing and comparing origins. Fun, eh?

Wanted a check for feedback from anyone interested.

I've built a monster list of the books, and I'm prepping to read them - comparing when I can - but if anyone could check to see if I'm missing anything major.

I've only made it to August 2002/December 1973, but I plan to continue re-reading them forward through the last books covered on the CD's (2005-ish), and re-compare them to books when I get forward enough through to 1991 and beyond, if I can. By then, I plan to re-incorporate my own books, too. (Those of you interested in a blow-by-blow coverage of West Coast Avengers - here it COMES!)

Anyhoo - most interested in feedback on the Valiant stages, here. Any suggestions, improvements much obliged. If I am missing something, let me know.

Thanks, kids!

HERE's the list!

Cool, but what happened to Tales to Astonishing, why start so late.
I think # 27 ( 1st Hank Pym) was the 2nd Marvel book, if you count it, as i think some don't with it not originally meant as a Marvel continuity book.
I think you have the 1st one as #62?

Most of my collection from that level moves from the Captain America, Iron Man, and Hulk DVD comic collections. That's why the limited Tales to Astonish/of Suspense.

Right, my apologies, i thought you had obtained the run of Marvel books from that era.

I find your endeavor interesting since I am a psychotherapist and comic book collector. I look forward to hearing your feedback through the end of Unity, but after that I gotta side with Draco. :thumb:

Suppose not.

The parsing of ab-so-LUTE-ly indicates similar emphasis to a short clip stamped at the end of every Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job episode. Also, I have seen such parsing used recently and figured that you were repeating something you had said before so I suspected a pattern.

And if there's something old Captain Stan could use, it's a smatter'n' of pattern*.

* - before anyone asks, this is an allusion to Tales from a Parallel Universe #3, Eating Pattern.

So, my ten-year old read Magnus 1 last night. I wanted to get her reaction, and see where she was going to be. I asked her, trying to remember my first reaction.

She looked at me, and said, "Everybody dies, but not everybody lives. I heard that in a song, and thought it fit."

:hm:

This may be a much bigger adventure than I'd anticipated.

Anyone interested in checking - we're rolling out here. No surprise - the kid loves Magnus, SOLAR and Harbinger - and is offended that I hate Hulk so much.

Thanks for checking, kids!

OK, I've caught up with what you posted so far! I'm loving it! My oldest daughter is 8, and we don't like many of the same comics. (Little Lulu is one the whole family can agree on, however.) But you have me thinking about seeing if I can get her to write reviews!
