I'd vote new blood. They will have to keep costs down. A strong story is what will keep the books selling.
Did a strong story work for Dark Horse/Dark Key?

From Aja's twitter account from May 20....
Have not said it, but I'm drawing an issue of ************* with @********** written by @***********. Already did the cover, tho.

did they have a strong story?

I thought is was just ok at the begining and (maybe) getting better at the end.

I read solar #1 and Magnus #1, I thought they were..... ok.

I guess for me, story is what matters.

I think guys like Aja are perfect. The stories will keep people coming back, but creators with some name recognition will get new readers to pick them up in the first place.

Look at Dark Key/Atlas/Stan Lee's BOOM. A small dedicated fanbase isn't going to be enough to sustain a line. They need to reach more people.

Mind you my choices are based on style I'd like to see in VALIANT or on particular characters not just based on who would bring instant money, I'm also not going to include people who really only (or mostly) do covers (Del Otto, Suydam, Bianchi etc ) My short list:

Gene Ha
David Aja
Shane Davis
John Cassaday
Joe Bennett
All good choices, especially Aja. His work on Iron Fist has been amazing. He'd be perfect on a book like Rai.
Great call.
Duane Swierczynski hasn't been writing much for Marvel lately..... :? :hm:

If all you read were Solar #1 and Magnus #1 how can you say they were "OK"???

What is Aja's roll in this? Covers?
Interiors? Both? His name does carry some recognition, but how much?

No idea, but he typically does covers and contributes to interiors in some manner (usually collaberates with other pencillers on interiors). That would fit his his tweet as well.

He carries some recognition. If we are talking grades, he's probably a B list artist.

Comparing him to the artists on DK/Atlas/BOOM he at least has SOME name recognition for the average comic reader.

I find it encouraging that they're working with quality, experienced creators but not breaking the bank going for overpriced "big names" (ala Birthquake)

I think Aja would be an excellent choice if he has been tapped for VEI if they (VEI) publish; and to me they remain big ifs, sorry to say.

You think... just maybe....I'm a big fan of Aja's work. He's top notch and way better than the quality of artist Dark Horse was using. His Iron Fist work was superb...

Although bleeding heart artist freaks will protest, the number of artists who actually moves book are minimal, and most of them are too big to be bothered or bring such a unique style that it may not fit a tight editorial setting (Alex Ross, Darwyn Cooke, Mike Mignola) or like a Jim Lee who are executives at their respective publishers. Not many artist left who sell books because of their presence, though I think two things can be accomplished.

1. You don't to look terrible or second rate. You want some recognition and quality.

2. If you have a respected cat in the industry...

Just out of curiosity, how was the Aja connection made, just from blanked out parts of a Tweet?

Were unblanked parts seen?

Has the 'someone saying something to someone' effect kicked in to support this?

If just the Tweet, could there be another reason for blanked out parts; perhaps a rigourous NDA with another publisher ahead of a massive reboot?
