Which time was this?sonicdan wrote:Reminds me of when Acclaim put their books on "hiatus"![]()

They just stop publishing at the end. There was no hiatus at the end (unless you count the delays between issues, which means the Gold Key titles have been on 6 haituses so far). Acclaim stopped publshing it's current titles and the future titles that had been pitched never happened and Acclaim ceased to exist as a comics publsher.
Of course Acclaim was a video game company not a comic publisher. They were never able to make any money on the comic publshing as far as I know and never really got a grip on how to do it effectively in their breif time in the comic industry.
Dark Horse is a comic publisher. They've done it for decades, they do it well, and as far as I can tell, they have no intention of stopping. They've been publishing Gold Key material for close to a decade and Mike Richardson has wanted to put out new material with Gold Key characters for at least 20 years. It doesn't mean they'll continue with the line, but I do think they'd like to, as we've been told.
So it doesn't really remind me of Acclaim all that much (at least not yet).

Well when the first volume of the Valiant books ended (under Acclaim) they said the characters would be back, possibly in mini series, one shots etc.
They did come back but not as we knew them before.
Rather they relaunched them as completely different characters. Some I enjoyed others I didn't. The original versions were not back however.
Then they abruptly canceled these books after about 2 years. Once again saying they would be back and to "stay tuned".
A side note they were plans to bring back the originals around this time but it was too late...
A bit later Shadowman V3 was launched (different) along with Armorines (better than original) and Quantum & Woody (same) which all led to Unity 2000.
We all know how that ended...or not. There were also plans to re-conceptualize Doctor Mirage, Master Darque, Bloodshot and Magnus that never materialized.
What I am saying is when I hear that something is on "hiatus" or "will be back!" I am a bit jaded. But that's just me. Maybe it won't be so bad.
Dark Horse has a better track record than Acclaim ever did but their handling of the line so far is not the most impressive.
There has been a pattern of wonderful announcements, getting hopes up, seeing a glimpse of how great something could be only to have it crash and burn...again and again (and again).

A great timeline of Acclaim, Dan. Thank you, MUCH of that I didn't know, especially the two year break in action.
This (dare I say it) could have been great.... I mean maybe. Can you elaborate any more on this ? Not to derail the thread but maybe this can somehow tie into the recent struggle to bring the GK characters back.sonicdan wrote:A side note they were plans to bring back the originals around this time but it was too late...

Anyone got any clue why Solar #7 is back on the Dark Horse site? It's listed as having been released this week (though obviously it's not). Maybe May 11 was a previous release date for it? (though it is strange for it to just reappear) We know from the letterer's blog that the lettering should have finished last week (which I think would be the last step in the creative process). No other unreleased issues have reappeared yet.

Thanks Knightt, You bet! What I'm meaning to say is that the Acclaim Comics Valiant Heroes books ran for about 2 years before they were canceledKnightt wrote:A great timeline of Acclaim, Dan. Thank you, MUCH of that I didn't know, especially the two year break in action.
....or put on "hiatus"

started publishing again: Turok magazines, Shadowman V3, relaunched Q&W etc.

I know there had been mentions of a Ninjak V1 & V2 team-up at one point. This was shown in the Ninjak Valiant Voyeur.Knightt wrote: This (dare I say it) could have been great.... I mean maybe. I think Fabian wanted some sort of battle royal where fans would get to possibly vote for which versions would make the cut.
Remnants of this may have been the seeds of the Acclaim mandated Unity 2000.
Man, I can't believe it's been 10+ years already so details are fuzzy.
I hope this helps a bit tho!

That's a good question. Everything's an enigma when it comes to figuring this stuff out.Todd Luck wrote:Anyone got any clue why Solar #7 is back on the Dark Horse site? Issue 7 is now on the website for July 11 (about 2 monthes after issue 6 shipped). If they could settle into that on all the books I could definately live with that (the original schedule was every 6 weeks anyway). So it definately seems like they're putting out the issues to finish the current plotlines (I assume they'll be adding them to the online shipping lists when they get the books done or close to done now)StarBrand wrote:That's a good question. I'm out of town for a weeks and all this happens. It's not really that surprising though. I thought one of the biggest blows to the line was Solar #1. It had huge numbers but I think the terrible art really killed it for the casual fan. If they had only started with Solar 5 and the origin story....
Turok and Magnus have been great, but as we know the lateness has been a huge problem. I really hope we at least get some mini-series to see the origin stories

Well a bit of a downer on an GREAT day as I took Solar, Magnus, Turok and Samson off my Pull List from DCBS. I think I am paid up to the point in which they may stop... if they go further then I will play catch-up.
Ah well, I added other titles... I have this need to make sure I do my part to keep comics 'alive'. At least I am getting a decent enough discount.
Sorry to see the DH books go... maybe someday I can add Valiant back to the pull list.

Pretty sad but...
My LCS is one of the largest in the Pittsburgh, PA area. There's always tons of people in there at all times of the day. Its been there quite a while and does very well. I see tons of customers leaving there with HUGE stacks every week. Jim Shooter is from this area of course and even came by there to sign things just this past Spring.
Anyways, I told the LCS manager the news of this line being put on hiatus/possible cancellation. He told me I was the ONLY PERSON buying these books. He said "I can see that happening because for our store for instance, the sales were YOU". I know this doesn't speak for everywhere but its pretty telling.
I hope the new Valiant at least has a chance of succeeding - you'd thing there would be SOME old time Valiant fans around this area checking out Shooter's Dark Key books. They call me the "Valiant guy" at that shop like im the only one who still talks about it and buy back issues, heh.

Many of us here get that very same thing... A LOT.Destro777 wrote:They call me the "Valiant guy" at that shop like im the only one who still talks about it and buy back issues, heh.
Or in my case (also) the Ultraverse guy or the Crossgen Guy or the Eclipse guy and so on. Many times I feel like an outcast from the looney bin out on my weekly walkabout

New Dimension Comics. I know the mall is dying, but the one in Century III West Mifflin. There's ALWAYS tons of people in there at all times of the day, its crazy. You wouldnt know the comic scene is dying based off that shop. Theres a couple NDC shops around the area too.kevinbastos wrote:Which comic shop are you talking in Pittsburgh? South Hills? The NDC at CIII runs its own show every November, and Jim Shooter came to this recent one. I wasnt able to make it though

Hehe. Thats ok tho - the Marvel/DC only peeps dont know what theyre missing! Our shop had a $3 sale on older TPB recently (it might even have been $1, cant remember). While I was browsing thru it, I was trying to tell people to give this Harbinger and X-O trade a look, and even then people wouldnt buy it. heh, oh well...Knightt wrote:Many of us here get that very same thing...
